Jump rope?

Does anyone here use jump rope training? just went out and got one to use instead of some of the running sessions that i will be missing. i have heard tons of great things but never really did it myself.

the only time i ever jumped rope was when i was unemployed and was pretty much living at the gym. a few strippers at bally's would jump (hehe) rope for like 20-40 mins for cardio and tried it out from time to time but i wasnt focusing on the benefits of jumping rope.....

here is one article i just read.. got a vid at the bottom

When I was training in Muay Thai we warmed up everyday with 10 min of jump rope. It burns about 2-4 times more calories than running, and after a while you can start doing double jumps, crosses, etc. Great for cordination

cool thats exactly what i was thinking ...

use it right in the am for a warmup or a full out workout

I hate jumping rope, but I still do 10 mins of it for warm up every session. It is a great way to warm up and it really helps with your foot work... When I use to use Steroids I would get painful Shin Splint like pains from jumping rope. That sucked!

It definatly WILL improve your foot work and speed.

I love it, but it's a love/hate relationship. Killer for the cardio, but it seems more painful than running (to me) for some reason.

I do it while at the firehall, since we don't have treadmills, and stair climbers are super-geigh. :rainbow:

I actually need to invest in a new rope....not to hijack the thread, but anyone have a type/brand they'd reccomend?

i got a $6 one at dicks sporting goods made by athletic works ive seen these at walmart and places like that and its nice

not sure if this sounds dumb do you guys do like 'sprints' or intervals or anything like that and do you stay in the same place or you moving around a lot?

thanks

ME too, dbol was not good for that.
Judo, I didn't do any intervals, but I would vary jumps and footwork. Like alternating feet while the ropes going real fast, or as many double jumps in a row as I could do

I jump rope 3-4 times a week. I learned it when I was wrestling in highschool and stuck with it. I incorporate intervals and criss crosses/double jumps. I love it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a new type of cardio to get into.

Jumping rope is one of the best cardio excercises around and just one more reason why boxers have always been called the worlds best conditioned athletes. Be very careful if you have knee problems as it can antagonize a knee that has a history of problems. I've had several knee surgeries and to my utter dismay I can't jump rope due to the eventual pain that sets in.

Soon I'll be entering my first fight school, and I'll have to let the teacher know that I'll have to exempt myself from the jump rope. That sucks but there ain't nothing you can do.

I absolutely hate jumping rope. I would much rather run. Honestly I don't think its that great for footwork. But if your the type of fighter that likes to hop around on the balls of your feet a lot, then I think its good for you.

I feel the exact same way! I HATE to jump rope...mostly because I am not great at it....I must really suck at it to even have my girlfriend laugh at me. Even in mid/highschool gym class..the teacher would have everyone jump rope?! I looked at that fat clown, gave a little smirk and tossed the rope back to him. "no thanx, Id rather run laps around the gym naked". Thank god he didnt take me on the offer, cuz I had gym in the morning and it was winter and that was a cold ass morning. lol

i definately hop around a lot on the toes of my feet in Judo.

especially before we grip. its basically how i set up all my double legs and wrestling type takedowns.

jumping rope is great.

When i was competing in knockdown competitions we used to do 3mins x 5 rounds of it.

tough stuff, but I was very fit then..

I usually just alternate feet, with the occasional sprint, untimed.

I might have to try jumping rope
I hate it because I am so bad at it but if it will help me with coordination I could use it
also might help with my cardio
I sure am fat : o (

All pro makes excellent ropes. Weighted or non weighted.
I run timed sprints regularly. I also in the winter, add a home made power sled I devised where I can stack 2x45lb weights on it and drag it. I wear cleats and run in the snow. Good workout.
Basically stole the idea from Donovin Darius who has an awesome work out.

I use a jump rope alot. I have to mix up my cardio and jumping for 3 minutes and then doing some crunches in between has definately added something new to my cardio routine....
