Buy the Sybex books for the certs
Look into the CompTIA A+ cert instead of the Microsoft version unless you want to get an MCP.
CompTIA Network+ would be good as well.
MCSA might be a bit advanced for beginners.
Cisco's CCNA would be a good addition as well.

A+ would be a good starting point. Get the book from Amazon for cheap, make sure you get the right book for the current test you are wanting to take. Read through the book, take the included practice exams, and study with the flash cards - just to see if that helpful enough.

LOLloolloloolollooool...to the power of ten....I got all of my certs from self study. The study guides were $120.00 for the basic requirements, 4 exams(MCSD in my case). The exams run around $125.00 per exam. They were "icing on the cake" for my real world experience, I got really tired of explaining the minutia of everything I know to potential employers.
