Jamie Oliver....

I was going to post something like this, i'm glad you did. I think its great what he is doing. Its really sad how some areas of the US don't even understand basic nutrition or how to cook. I feel so fortunate that my mom was able to teach me these things and I've taken interest in cooking. My interest in cooking and knack for nutrition has really helped me in life be able to make food that tastes good but is good for me.

Its funny when people ask how do I know how to cook like that I take it for granted that its common sense to me. I'd be such an over weight piece of crap if I didn't understand basic nutrition, anatomy, biology, chemistry, and cooking. High school and college really does pay off if you pay attention and apply what you learn.

No more fries sounds a bit strict but I can't believe they have vending machines on campus with soda and all that.

Yeah they took soda's out of schools here years ago. I don't know what is in caffatira's now a days back in my day it was all mostly junk that is for sure. It was crazy that the kids didn't know what the hell a tomatoe he was like do you know what ketchup is? Of course they did.

Holy mother of God. Surely you shit me? They didn't know how to recognize a fucking tomato?

Dude when people in other parts of the world say Americans are ignorant fucktards, stuff like this makes it really hard to argue with them, you know?

We didn't have ANY junk in school. We had like two choices every day and it was like home food only the beef was really soy, which I didn't find out til years later.

Girl I swear they didn't know what a potatoe was either. This was 6 year olds but the sure as hell knew what a french frie was. It is somewhere in virgina the show is being filmed.

I grew up on a farm so I think my perspective is a bit diffrent as I remember going to the garden and picking veggies at a very young age. Watching this show actually made me think of this and miss it.

I have both episodes tivoed, I did get to see a few minutes of the first one and it was appalling. He was asking kids what they eat at home, it's nuggets for breakfast lunch and dinner. The market brainwashing that these kids get is tragic. THey are raised sheep. THe arguments that people make their own way in this world are starting to hold less and less water when you have PhD's in psychology running marketing campaigns that target children who's minds aren't even remotely fully developed. Free market fixes everything my fucking ass.....it's ruining everything. There's big money in brainwashing children. This show is probably going to reinforce my intention of never raising children in this country.

Don't put it all on the advertisers, as the majority of the blame lies with the lazy parents:

1. Too lazy to cook proper meals for their children.

or

2. Too lazy to kick their asses when they throw fits demanding nuggets and fries, refusing to eat healthy food. (who's in charge, anyways?!)

When I was a kid, we got McDonald's maybe once every two months...tops. We were expected to eat normal balanced meals at home; there was no seperate kiddie meal comprised of processed junk coming out of my mom's kitchen. Lazy parents are the biggest factor in the childhood obesity equation.

are they lazy or do they just not know better? can they even cook? If their parents didn't teach them how to properly cook becuase everyone knows there's a restaurant around every corner so why bother.....than is it laziness or social conditioning?

It's probably both. People just need to be informed that the food industry does not have their best interests in mind. The food you get outside your home, with some exceptions obviously, should be treated as luxury that you treat yourself to "every now and then" because the food while it may test good....is pure and utter swine shit.

Well if you have ever read fast food nation you know it is less expensive to eat crap then healthy. Take me for example on average I will spend $50 a week on groceries this is going to a chicken farm getting a bulk discount on 4kg for $30 and then the rest is mostly fresh veggies of some sort and omega eggs depends but stil my point is I am one person that eats healthy. If I had a family that would be way more like thinking $200 a week.

When Jamie took over the schools kitchen there grocery bill doubled, the task he has for next week is to keep the bill the same that should be intresting to see what he does.

That part of your reply argues the same thing that I did, only you went back one generation further. :)

Either way, a lazy parent (or grandparent, or great-grandparent) allowed this to happen for one reason or another.

absolutely correct....but then can you blame this generation?

QT is right about the cost thing, that definitely has to be addressed. The economics has to turn local with short supply chains. What people don't understand is that the food conglomerates made shit food cheaper, but by proxy make good food more expensive. Because they own the supply lines and the most of the land that goes into food production, they can streamline their costs. The one or two local operations can't compete economically so they get run out. Land has to go back to local/regional growing and competition between local outfits will keep prices down.

Take the meat industry as an example. Back in the 20's and 30's, when there were thousands of slaughter houses' in the U.S...meat was still affordable to the average household. Now that we have like 5 slaughterhouse's in the whole country....meat is actually a bit more expensive but it's "plentiful". So much so that we eat too much of it and throw even more away. Because of modern preservation technology they were able to extend their supply lines and dominate more territory......but all they did was expand their revenue, they didn't "improve" the food source. They made it worse. Watch Food inc. and you'll understand why cattle in this country "has" to be hopped up to the gills on antibiotics.

I've seen what a feedlot looks/smells like; driving from San Fran to Los Angeles in September I drove by a huge cattle feedlot; I don't even want to guess how many head of cattle were there, but the shades they had built for them went on for what seemed like miles. The smell coming from there was ungodly...and not just your standard cow manure smell. It was clear that many die from the heat, and were not removed from the herd and buried promplty. Gotta wonder about that many animals living one on top of the other with some rotting flesh in the mix.:worried:

fucking sick....and then they toss all that meat up in a grinder and serve it up...:barf:

At my house the kids dont have a choice. If I take the time to cook it...then they have to take at least 5 bites. I dont make them clean their plates but we are not doing the whole chicken nugget thing everyday. FUnny thing is I try to expose them to new and different healthy foods and they are always hesitant at first but normally they end up liking it. Also it is definately way more expensive to eat healthy than to eat the crap processed food. ONe thing you can try is if you have an Amish community near you then you can find nice fresh foods. I am lucky my dada still has the 200 acre farm I grem up on. We raise our own beef and veggies.

I grew up working in the garden. My childhood summers were spent weeding, picking, canning, freezing etc. We had 3 gardens, cornfield & orchard. Also raised lamb, cattle and pigs. We never had junk food in the house. I was introduced to fruits & veggies and was made to eat them @ an earlier age--Guess what? Now I luv all veg & fruits. Never had a wt. prob. until I moved away and ate more processed food. Never ate real bad, just didn"t always eat the good stuff. Getting back to that now :)

Snapping green beans for canning was a traumatic childhood experience...We were expected to work to take care of the family as kids.

I have seen shows where children have never eaten real fruits/veggies and turn their noses up at them. Mostly because the parents don't eat that way and don't make the children.

We had grocery paper bags full of beans- yes picking, snapping, canning- but peas were the best because they were fun to eat while shelling them, plus it meant less work later on-lol

I think it's great, apparently 16 schools have revamped their kitchens because of this. I remember in my (high) school everyone just ate fries...I don't remember any healthy food there. i always brought my own lunch though because it was cheaper.
My grandma started teaching me how to cook when i was 3 or 4, cutting up vegetables for soup or salad standing on a chair to reach the counter lol
Since I was 9 or 10 was in charge of making breakfast for evryone because i woke up the earliest. made my own lunches, often cooked dinner for the family. Children should know how to grocery shop, choose their food, and know how to cook it so they can manage their lives.

agreed, and this goes for both boys and girls. I have no respect for a man that can't cook for himself...same with a woman actually as their just as many of them nowadays as the guys.
