Patsfan, didn't you used to be a total ana-board guy? I may be wrong, but I swear you used to post almost solely on the ana-board.

I'm tired

Devastation,

Why don't you go on the training board from time to time ?

Actually I have a question for you (posted on this board but no ansxer yet):

When you do regular deadlifts, starting BB on the floor, how can you have a flat/slightly arched back AND the knees not past toes ???

I try to keep a flat back but my knees are past toes and that seems to put some stress on my already screwed patella

and should the BB touch your shins ?
I know that w/ Romanian DL the BB is "far" from the shins but what about regular DL ?
(I end up some of my deads workout with blood on the BB...)

i usually only post on the pl'ing forum
if you are doing conventional deads, shoulders should stay behind the knees when starting. sounds like you are too bent over starting out. the idea is to get the bar off the floor with leverage by leaning back. many top deadlifters appear to almost stiff leg it off the floor. most of the effort should be from your hips, hams, and glutes. also the bar should be a couple of inches away from your shins when you begin. the bar will come against your shin after you break it from the floor. where is your thread at?

Thx

My main concern is to preserve my knees

If I start w/ the bar a couple of inches away from my shins I tend to have the knees well past over the toes (but the shoulders are behind)

knees should be directly over your feet, but not past the toes. you do conventional deads then right? not sumo? also are you starting with your ass too low? that will push your kneew forward

I do both SLDL (which are fine) and conventional DLs

"ass too low" : I think you're plain right !
I didn't really think about it but, yes, I start with my ass at about knees level which as you say push the knees forward

Thanks a lot :)

I've always started with my ass very low for 1RM max attempts, and I think this might be holding me back.

I thought I could generate more power this way.

what are you going for?

I got 405 back in November with what I see now is some shoddy form. I remember my hamstrings and glutes were blown out and my back felt nothing after that lift.

I'd like to get 430-440. A big PR, but I've been moving up in jumps of 30 pounds every time I try.

He hit me with red today for jokingly hitting biteme with a bomb for his thread about nothing...

DB usually gets green from me, don't know why he got bent out of shape about me bombing biteme.

So riddle me this -- how is it that Phaded bombed me before you did? Huh?

"In winter, the mean temperature remains below 0°C, but warm air flows can raise the daily high above 0°C at times. Winter usually begins in mid-October in Lapland and during November in the rest of Finland, though not until December in the southwestern archipelago. It thus takes about two months for winter to proceed from Lapland to Åland. The sea and lakes retard the progress of winter. Winter is the longest season, lasting for about 100 days in southwestern Finland and 200 days in Lapland.

North of the Arctic Circle, part of the winter is the period known as the polar night, when the sun does not rise above the horizon at all. In the northernmost extremity of Finland, the polar night lasts for 51 days. In southern Finland, the shortest day is about 6 hours long.

Permanent snow falls on open ground about two weeks after winter begins. The snow cover is deepest around mid-March, with an average of 60 to 90 cm of snow in eastern and northern Finland and 20 to 30 cm in southwestern Finland. The lakes freeze over in late November and early December. The ice is thickest in early April, at about 50 to 65 cm. In severe winters, the Baltic Sea may ice over nearly completely, but in mild winters it remains open except for the far ends of the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland.

The coldest day of winter comes well after perihelion, at the end of January everywhere except in the islands and coastal regions, where the slower cooling of the sea delays the coldest period until the beginning of February. The lowest temperatures in winter are from -45°C to -50°C in Lapland and eastern Finland; from -35°C to -45°C elsewhere; and -25°C to -35°C in the islands and coastal regions. The lowest temperature recorded in Helsinki is -34.3°C (1987). The lowest temperature recorded at any weather station in Finland during the past 100 years is -50.4°C (1985)"
