Is white bread really of the devil?

Madd Hatter

I've seen threads on other fitness boards where they just rip it apart and make it sound like it's worse than eating a chocolate cake by yourself. Is it true Arnold called it the white death?
Well, I eat it. As a child I was forced to eat wheat bread, had white bread in college, realized wheat bread sucked, and never went back. I'm in a permanent bulk, and am such a hard gainer sometimes I think I can eat whatever. But I'm putting on as much or more fat than muscle it seems, so I'm looking everywhere to try to fix this. First up on the chopping block was my high-in-simple-sugars maple & brown sugar instant oatmeal, in came super-bland plain oats. Should white bread be next?
Does it all taste equally shitty or is there some kind I should try first? I guess if it really is the white death, that could be what's fucking me because of the 8in french loaf I eat for my dinner sub (I don't think my grocery store has an alternative for my french loaves). Otherwise I just eat 2 slices a day (usually).

Hmm

I dont find WHOLE wheat bread that bad. As a KId growing up everyday I had PBand J on white bread, or ham, or Roast beef, and it was ok. AS I got older and realized how shitty it is I stopped eating it, if u find whole wheat bad to eat, I find Toasting it makes it taste better, I like to refrigerate my bread makes it fresher and alittle stiffer, Bulking or cutting I dont eat BREAD or startches, and the Oatmeal with maple syrup and brown sugar what is that? Just eat the Oatmeal, add some flavoring or a bit of PB. I find it better to add 1/4 of the amount of water they say. SO if it says add 1 cup of water, I put in 1/4 of a cup. It taste like shit if it is watery reminds me of that food that ate in the Matrix

no, white bread is not evil

... it is just a quite high GI carb
but if you add fiber and proteins it decreases its GI

and it can be a good post workout carb

A Glycemic Index is used to measure your blood glucose response as compared to a set standard. I have seen two GI standards used, table sugar and white bread. Whichever standard is used is assigned an index value of 100 and almost all other carbs elicit a lower glucose response, so are given an index number of less than 100 based on their individual performance. This tells me that white bread is nutritionaly on par with sugar so I would treat it the same.

You know, I have often been curious if white bread is the devil. Once, in college, a loaf of wonderbread sprouted horns and told me it was Satan.

Of course that may have been the mushrooms I ate.

white bread = sugar only if you eat your bread with nothing else (as the GI is measured)

but if you have another food with it it is not that bad
