Is what this taxi driver did criminal? (Graphic)

This happened Friday night in Montreal.
There has been violent student protests almost every day for the last 3 weeks (or more) and the kids on the streets have been out of control.
Shutting down streets in the city, blocking the major bridge into the city and destroying property all over.
These little brats are protesting over tuition hikes of $300 a yrs.

We have the best Universities in North America and it costs about $3000 a yr to go to them (government subsidizes) and the kids are outraged at these hikes. Whatever!

This Taxi was just trying to get around and this is what happened

This video is the whole event the second video is graphic (think you need to sign into youtube to see it)

The kid who starts the trouble gets the worst of it

Actually here is the story from the news. These kids were not about the protest that night, Everyone thought it was

Full story here

MONTREAL — A young man is in hospital and a taxi driver is under arrest after an altercation on St. Laurent Blvd. early Sunday morning.

The incident took place around 4 a.m. at the corner of Rachel St. in Plateau-Mont-Royal. The man entered into a conflict with a group of people.

According to witnesses, the group was arguing with the man and attacked his vehicle. The driver attempted to leave and a 23-year-old man was struck down.

Jonathan Himsworth, who captured the scene on video, described it as "a horrific incident to witness."

"I just wanted there to be a witness for that. I didn't expect him to retaliate quite so extraordinarily," he said.

"That suspect was rushed to the hospital. He was in a critical state, but this morning was in stable condition," said Raphael Bergeron of the Montreal police. The man is in stable condition.

The driver sped off.

A 47-year-old taxi driver was later arrested.

"The cab driver was arrested shortly after the event for assault with a weapon, obviously due to the fact that he ran over one of the suspects," said Bergeron.

A 42-year-old passenger was also arrested for mischief committed to the taxi.

Police are interview both men. No charges have been laid so far.

Disturbing incident: witness

The altercation is said to have begun inside the taxi over a fare. Himsworth said he saw an angry customer exit the vehicle.

"He slammed the door extraordinarily loudly to the point where I was quite taken aback," he said, adding that the taxi driver jumped out of his car and confronted the passenger.

Himsworth said he left the scene soon after, because he was uncomfortable with how far the verbal argument had escalated.

"The cab driver's face was so vehement. I've never seen someone be so angry," he said.

Himsworth entered his home and shortly after, heard a commotion on the street.

The witness opened his window and said he saw the taxi driver aiming for his passengers.

"The same passengers that were in the cab are being chased by the cabbie reversed, back-and-forth in the intersection essentially just trying to hit them," he said.

That's when Himsworth pressed record on his camera.

"We saw the cab driver ram his cab into the lamppost. At that point I started running footage," he said.

Himsworth sent the video to CTV.

He did exactly the right thing, imo. He had reason to fear for his life. I thought they were going to drag him out of the car.

Edit- the story changes things.

it does, but I wonder if the driver was all stressed because of all the angst in the city from all the violence from all the protesting.

he did snap, i'd say he was either crazy or just at the end of the rope

If a group of men were attacking my car, I would of run their asses over too. In the movie it looks justified, but with the story it become questionable

Fuck Texas you hillbilly faggot. Surprised you inbred fucks know how to use a computer. Maybe you should get out of your chair and go back to making cousin-kids with your aunty

I love Canada and there are a lot of Great Canadians on this board, so sorry if I offend any good Bro's by saying this: Fuck French-Canadians.

That is where I stayed when I was in Montreal (On that street) and was attacked down the block walking from the hotel. But, I must be making that up because there is no violence in Montreal. Sorry, I forgot.
Eventually people were going to see what I saw in the media. I did not report when I was attacked.

4am...that's the problem right there..

afraid for is life, if he had not backed up in an attempt to hurt someone.. at that point he becomes the aggressor.

just when I think blueta might not be batshit crazy she makes dumbass generalizations about young people and americans

I'm far from batshit crazy! It's common knowledge many American are uneducated about anything BUT the U S OF A!

We have shows up here where a reporter goes down to the US and asks random citizens who their prez is and more than half don't have a clue.

Don't be so defensive, I am sure you're way smarter than the average overweight american

I never said there was no violence here. I said we don't have "Ghetto's" and rough neighborhoods.
The street this was taken on was the mecca of the city where all the famous and rich people hang out.

So.......any feedback on the events here! Was the cabby wrong or did the kid deserve it??
The second video was so hard to watch

They are both equally at fault. They are all dumb fucks. They deserve whatever comes their ways. Injuries and jail time.

there's lots of violence everywhere, and we hear how bad it is in montreal. the french speaking quebecers dislike us as much as most of us dislike them.

i live in one of the most 1% places in canada. its all rich white people. there are even bylaws on how your yard must be setup. you are not allowed to have just grass, must have a certain percent decorative rock garden/shrubbage etc. even our indian reserve nearby is pretty fancy. and we get violence

And I really wish the Montreal police would squash these protests in a hurry...let the tear gas fly early and often, and go in there batons swinging...beat those morons down. Who the hell do they think they are obstructing traffic and vandalizing the city? There should be a zero tolerance attitude towards this sort of protesting.

fuck it,id have ran his ass down, until you are caught in the middle of a mob scene you have no idea how it feels.

I got stuck in a huge protest in london about some kid who was hit with a taser from the police, 200 people swarmed the street out of no where, and here I sit in a white impala with a dash light (for the fire dept) but when its off I looked suspiciously like a cop.

I damn near shit

LOL.

I didn't watch the graphic vid, but the other one didn't look so bad other than dude ran off.

+1

he was being attacked. if they managed to break the window, they'd probably drag him out and beat him. So with 'stand your ground' defense, he was trying to get away and dummy put HIMSELF in front of the car.

that's okay. This is Canada, driver will get probably a $150 fine and a stern talking to.

The guy is an immigrant and now he's in jail waiting for a bail hearing.
The dude who was run over apparently has major brain damage. Sad for both parties involved.

This is what I thought at first, but the cabby had ample time to get away, but these kids enraged him. His taxi is his business, when you fuck with someone's business, there is no rules then,

I agree, I can't believe how long they are letting this go.

These students are not getting any sympathy from anyone

perhaps, but people freeze when scared, there is no saying that didnt happen, then he finally got control of that ,was pissed and took off.

if he doesnt walk its another epic fail of the canadian injustice system.

lets put those in jail who try and defend themselves, however sex offender graham james gets two years, hmmmmmmm WTF

My formal and sincere apology to those that I offended with my negative comment toward Canadians, earlier in this post. Many good brothers in this forum from the north, and I'm man enough to admit it was ignorant and uncalled for.

You think the shows aren't edited? I've seen the shows that do that. You think it benefits them to leave in I'm sure all the people who did know the answers to the questions they asked them? No. That's not entertaining.

I don't mean this personally, but anybody who just believes the majority of Americans really walk around knowing shit about our own country and others is just as stupid as any 'stereotypical American' they see on their edited segments.

Every other country is bullshitting themselves if they think I couldn't drive up to Canada and ask questions about their government and country that some of their citizens would answer incorrectly then throw all those people in to a show and pretend the whole country is ignorant.

I've met more Americans than are on those TV shows and never met one who didn't know who our president was.

I have many friends in the US and here are a few examples (my friends all differ in race, education etc). My friends in NY state had NO idea where Montreal was.
They thought it was on the west coast. Now here's the kicker, Montreal is 4 hrs DIRECTLY above where they live. Americans think everyone in Canada is french. Some of my American friends didn't know we had xmas or thanksgiving in Canada. Also, none of my American friends were able to name our Canadian Prime Minster. Not a clue, yet ask any Canadian and they know who the US prez is.

Americans are notoriously known for not having a clue what happens outside their own country. In US schools, they do not teach international geography, but in Canadian school, as early as in grade 3, we learn all about North American and the world.

Not say all Americans are clueless, but a good few are.

Do you know the capital of Canada without googling it?

I actually know nothing about our own politics. I didn't even know my premier was a woman till last month. It's not that I'm stupid. I haven't turned on a tv in years, I don't read news papers and every minute I'm not at work, or sleeping, I'm playing in the mountains. On top of that, I just don't give a fuck.

Ok. My college room mate was from Canada and she's about to start her 7th year of college...toward a bachelor's degree, something I finished in 3 years as a double major. Of course, I don't think the majority of Canadians are dumbasses like her, just like I don't think your personal stories mean the majority of Americans are dumbasses like them.

I don't know where you're getting your information, or if you're making stuff up, but U.S. schools 100% do teach international geography. I remember taking one test specifically in middle school where we had to fill in all the country names on a map of Africa and name their capitols.

And I absolutely do know the capitol of Canada. I could probably name the capitols of the majority of countries in the world without googling it.

^ Point proven, blue. I'm sure I can find many other cobra's in Canada...and if I put them all on to 1 TV show, that wouldn't mean the majority of Canadians are ignorant.

All that show means is we have a few stupid people in America, but no more stupid people here than in Canada or anywhere else.

You have a plat, black her fucking ass out until thanksgiving - the real one.

Afeez, it's not me making this up. This is how people see it because it's true.
Doesn't mean all Americans are not educated, but most are not.
Don't take offense, it's not a personal comment on you. You're smarter than the average American

No, we have VERY inexpensive high end education system in Canada, so more citizens are able to afford education. It's not the people's fault, it's your shitty governments fault.

:( it is not stupidity it is apathy. I don't care who does what for which political party. I would rather go biking or rock climbing than talk about politics.

Bill Mahr makes money off saying inflammatory things. You might as well post something that says "Americans are racist" and then justify it with a Jesse Jackson video

I meant that you were making up U.S. schools not teaching geography. I attended American schools and I know for a fact they did.

And just because other people agree or share your opinion, doesn't mean the opinion is true. We have no more idiots here than you do. Difference being, nobody from America has been up to Canada to make a show out of your stupidity yet.

No, not true! We have a higher education system here.
Fact!

Why are you taking this as a personal attack?
You attended all American schools?

I'm not going to comment on who has a higher education system, because there's no purpose. It's pointless to discuss because I believe education is one of those things where you learn as much as you want to learn. No matter what school or where, the person who receives the best education is the person who wants to receive the best education.

I didn't say anyone's education was better than anybody else's. All I said was that you were wrong when you said we don't teach international geography here. That's a fact. That's all I'll say you're wrong about because because the rest is opinion, and there's no such thing as "wrong" in that realm.

I'm not taking it as an attack at all, let alone a personal one. I disagree with you and I'm discussing our opinions on the matter. :) I rarely respond to someone I think has gone in to attack mode. You'll know if I feel I'm being personally attacked, because I'll bow out.

This is my opinion on many debates in life, relationship, politics, w/e.

It's a matter of point of view. Now some ppl do just do wrong things but very often negativity or wrong doing is not intended. It is a simple misconception in point of view. Common sense is relative to how you are raised and the environment you grew up in. Certain situations have led ppl to believe certain things or react a certain way to situations based on knowledge/experience from their lives. 2 different ppl who have had very different circumstances will believe different things and think they are right. Often they both are correct but cannot understand the others point of view. You two can defend your statements till the end of time because there is some truth to each opinion

Sorry not higher educations, I meant more accessible. Everyone in Canada has access to free and./or government subsidizes education, so more people attend school and more are educated. That's what I meant

And yet you are 1 of 2 people from EF that I have on FB. I'm so pleased to see the admiration is so mutual! lol

lol I actually do like you. :qt:

I have like 30 albums or something nuts, probably 20 of which are drunken, retarded pictures from college. I hide them from lots of people than just EFers. lol So "It's not you, it's me". haha

Let's put this whole Canadian higher education system into perspective.

Duke University (a good, mid-range US university -- yet one or many) has more Nobel Laureates in scientific fields working for it than the entire country of Canada has ever produced in its history.
