Is walking equal to jogging when doing cardio?

I think the aim is for beats per minute heart rate. So It may not matter the type of cardio, (excluding hiit etc.)

If you get your target heart rate, then you should be fine.

here is a dumb question (im half dumb)

i see all these charts that tell you what your heart rate should be, what percentage to get the best benefit, yada, but.. when is the best time to actually check your heartrate? ive tried checking my pulse using my wrist while i'm a few minutes into my run, but i cant get a good read....nor do i want to stop to check and then start up. whats the best advice to check myself and at what time? usually i stretch, walk for 5 minutes, then run 2.5 miles, i would like to make sure im in not over or under doing it.

thanx

bam bam, try a rowing machine, aerobics, or swimming, walking is boring :)

calories directly related to distance travelled as they are a measure of work expelled. However, I personally see a tad more cals being burnt as a result of more upward force when running as opposed to walking. It also sustains a higher HR and as a result is more of a cardiovascular workout as opposed to a straight cardio burn.

n3rve,

Good question....

Palpating your own heart rate during exercise is tough, especially high impact cardio like jogging. If you really want to get an accurate read, you may want to try a heart rate monitor. They are very easy to use and you will forget you have it on. It will tell you your BPM on a wrist watch. Very nice addition to the exercisers arsenal.
