Is there a link between female bodybuilders and Cellulite?

I know this may be a dumb question, but hear me out.....

Before I started weight training (with knowledge to build muscle), which was about 3 years ago, I never had an inch of cellulite on my body. In 2002 I did really well on Body for LIFE and started gaining some lean muscle - great. The following year, I did yet another challenge and really, really, really started seing a lot of definition. Since say mid 2004, I had been training on and off and eating like shit (if I do say so myself) and of course, put on a lot of fat and lost my hard earned muscle. The only thing is that I also started to notice quite a bit of orange peel popping up on my whole body! I have since started my training and eating as clean as possible for the past couple of months, after seing the cellulite slowly develop on my calves area was the major turning point.

Alas, the cellulite is coming off now (thank goodness), but I am convinced there is a link between bodybuilders and cellulite. I for one do not consider myself a bodybuilder at all, but I am just still convinced that muscle loss has something to do with cellulite or the 'enhancement' of it ....

What ya'll think?

SOunds like you crashed your metabolism the second time around to me.....lost muslce whcih lowered your Metabolic rate...THATS the link....

BBINg cannot "create" cellulite cells

Hey Shaddow, thats very interesting....

However, I didnt mean that BBing could create the cellulite, I was just wondering if you weight train you definately gain muscle correct, but when you out of the the game for a while is it easier for that muscle to get flabby and leave you with cellulite?

:)

NO...

Muscle is muscle

fat is fat

there is no interchanging of the two...its quite biologically impossible

I would say, yes, that after not BBing for a while, the atrophy of the muscle would cause the connective tissue to stretch further, causing the cellulite to appear worse. Cellulite is actually caused by the fat showing thru at the skin level due to stretching of the connective tissue between the skin & the fat. Having muscle will push the fat closer to the surface, eliminating the stretching of the connective tissue.

What Jen is referring to is called the mattress effect...its caused by thinning of connective structure beneath the surface of the skin in the upper compartment systems of fat tissue.

If you are seeing cellilite EVERYWHERE as you have referred.....I seriously doubt that your entire freeway of connective tissue has thinned to that degree.....lots of things effecte it.....even water intake.

Fat gain is cause by fat cells growing too large.....some research shows this is a contributing factor the the dimpled appearance...fat cells growing TOO QUICKLY...such as often happens after a contest or extreme weight loss followed by rapid weight gain...throw in muscle loss as Jen also treferred to and its the recipe for disaster

the real problem here is overall fat gain...not loss of muscle...
