Is it worth while...

switching gyms for one that has a glute-ham raise???

I have never done these and hear they are very important to PLers.

My current healthclub is cheap and close and convenient. There is a gold's down the street a few miles for the same price, but would have to pay the start-up fee.

The extra few miles would add time to my evening commute. Is the GHR that beneficial?

Does your current gym have a hyper extension that is pretty adjustable?

I got a smoking deal on a hyper extension and I modified it to where I can do GHR's on it. I'll try to post a video in the morning so you can get an idea.

They are a great exercise and after doing them for several weeks, I can't imagine not doing them anymore.

End of this video (one of the worst sessions I've had all year by the way...lol)

b fold.. was cool to watch ^^ idk maybe just the fact you're from EF lol but i enjoyed it. thats intense shit

also, quick question on hypers. Are they only for lower back or do they hit any other muscles (maybe abs)?

hypers hit mainly the lower back, but abs, hams and glutes are also involved. GHR's hit mainly hams and glutes but lower back and abs are also involved.

Here's some options:

YouTube - Poor Man's Glute Ham Raise
you need someone to help you...

YouTube - Glute ham raise
you need a lat pulldown machine (what gym doesn't have one? Although you gotta find a seat wide enough to fit your knees..

YouTube - Glute Ham Raise Alternative - Phil Felice
Never thought of this one...

Also, I used to find a place to snug my feet in and hold my ankles kind of like the 3rd video, but instead of a ball, I would use those body mats moth health clubs have for abs to protect my knees.

I have never used a GHR machine so I don't really know if they are much better...

that 3rd vid looks like an option. The first two seem real bad for the knees and the 2nd one requiring a lat pull down, the bench is too narrow. I'll have to find that 1/2 ball and see if I can wedge my feet under some equipment.

thats what this thread is about. My gym doesn't have one. I am considering swithcing if gold's has the ghr and roman chair, etc. if peeps think it is holding me back.

bro Im not an expert at all but everytime I look at your journal you set 5 pr's or more each workout, I would say nothing is holding you back at the moment...

all good things come to an end my friend, but you make a valid point...

ok, so if your squats and deads stall, not your bench then you will know its likely somthing to do with your posterior chain, then you could give the new gym a try which has a proper GHR and if it solves your squat and dead problem then great!

GHR is a great exercise. But it's one single exercise.

There's always options - either alternative GHRs (someone holding your legs is how they did them before machines) or different exercises targeting hams.

All things being equal, is Gold's set-up all around better to be worth the extra trip? Different gyms always have their pluses and minuses. I know I'm guilty of the some thing, but don't let your latest interest distort the big picture. You'll be fine doing SLDL, RDL, Dimmel DL, pullthroughs, leg press w/feet high and wide, improvised GHR, etc.

See if you can get a free pass at Golds for the week and give it a try first before making up your mind.

yeah I'm definitely gonna do this...the 7 day pass. I love working out at new gyms.

They won't quote prices over the phone, but I won't switch unless they will match or beat current monthly rate, zero sign up fee and allow access to all gyms across the country. I will bring them two memberships if they are willing to play ball.

Got the week pass and worked ou there today. They have different stuff, some better some worse. No GHR but enough equipment to easily do the exercise. No one has harassed me about about a mandatory tour, a fitness assessment, or prices yet...THAT is a welcome change.
