I'm planing on going back to the states in a year or two and many people warn me not to do it because of the crysis, unemployment, etc Are things really that bad over there? is it that hard to get a job? is everything so expensive and the cash income so low comparing what comes in to what comes out...?
I'd love to go back but I do need to get the big picture before I do....

You have a PHD.
You will be just fine.

Things are bad, but we are stiil top dog.
No other country offers opportunity regardless of creed, race, or whatever surface difference 'appears'.

That said I think Kurzweill, and the financial tech gurus are right, within the next decade India, China will be to the very least on our level, but maybe higher.

What profession are you in? It all depends. Health care is still thriving. My wife's firm is hiring left and right. Other areas are not all that good.

My area is health care... neuropsychology... here in Costa Rica I do really good, I have my own house, car, good food, good drinks, no debt (just education one) $ to go out, buy electronics, etc really happy with it but of course is not like US but don't really want to go back if it's that complicated right now.... I was offered a job in the Mayo clinic MN as soon as I graduate.... any one from that area?

I hear Costa Rica is BEAUTIFUL! Why would you leave a place that is very pretty and where you seem to have it pretty good?

Well I was born and raised in the US so for me that's home, I like it here and have been here long time but don't feel like I belong.... I'm also sure I'd do much better in the US, here we make 1/3 of the salary and things are equal or more expensive....

get the fuck outta there before this thing gets you

No. We are a nation of whiners. Eveyr night, people are partying, drinking, having sex. People are dating, eating, playing with their kids, watching movies. The US is sitll open for business and still better than any other nation out there (except amazonia land of the hot tall women). We're just relaly stupid right now, and allowing wall st crooks take this nation for a ride through a scam of a president.

Standard of Living is taking a nose-dive, but pure hell? Fuck no. I eat at a steak today, and later tonight - going to a concert and hanging with hot chicks.

That's kind of what I thought, here were supposed to be in "crysis" to but u see people partying, going to the movies, eating out, getting an 09 car, etc granted it affects you a bit but not that much, figured was same over there but wanted to double check with people who are actually there....

Stay in Costa Rica! I will come and crash on your couch for a month or so. It will be great. I'll make you an omelette every morning.

Hmmmm does sound tempting.... ^_^ Specially since I can rarely have breakfast :o

I can throw you the game of people that know how to kill and had to deal with it for years....

This goes back to the old days...and ariel....he doesn't understand but he tries..

I understand the concept of not feeling like you are home better than you realize as I am the child of immigrants who really did not WANT to leave their country and whose family migrated back because of disenchantedment with the United States...

"Home" is where you feel comfortable and loved. And has little to do with nationality.

Texas' economy is BOOMING. People are friendly and nice to a great extent, as long as you learn to recognize the "wolves in sheep's clothing" LOL. It IS the bible belt so you can take from my comments what you will.

I still shake my head over you wanting to leave (what I have heard) is paradise.

Well... as I told a poster who asked me about CR I can tell you it is a bit unsfae, salaries suck (average is about $500-$600) decent house is $100k, decent rent is $400, gas for ur car around $100 a month, good groceries shopping $200, people get gun pointed off their cars in the capitol (not all parts are bad but they seem to be expanding),,, it's not very nice, it has cool beaches, hot springs, volcanos, rain forest, etc.... but it's getting worse and worse as per safety and economy.... I have a very very decent salary and live well but am positive in US will be much better...
