Is it possible to teach yourself martial arts? (no trainer)

Pat Miletich(Google him if you haven't heard the name before)said in an interview that when he first started his training camp, all they did was watch videos(Bas Rutten tapes, I think), and practice the moves they saw. He's got a good record and his camp and fighting system are well respected. I'm sure as things grew, they did more than watch tapes, but it was a start.
Also, I was given advice that if I was going to train by myself at some time, to set up a camera and record it. Then it would be easier to spot mistakes and such, like dropping my hand after throwing a punch, etc.

Many of Miletich's original were national caliber wrestlers or experienced in other arenas, so they were going in with legitimate pre-existing skills.

Recording is a great way to scout your mistakes.

If you've got the ability to, it would be very valuable to tape yourself with partners in order to sit back and analyze yourself. It's a far cry from having an instructor, but it's a useful tool.

Good point.

my first bjj instructor was 100% self taught from the start.. then he eventually just went to a few rickson seminars to get tested.. he did have partners to help though..

definately get a punching bag and practice the basics of boxing and kickboxing.. then maybe move on to thai boxing techniques..

make a grappling dummy.. and easy cheap way is to buy a pair of the one piece pajamas .. the ones with the feeties/footsys and zipper up the front and just stuff it with old blankets or clothes. that will at least allow you to go through all the positions and stuff.

then find a partner to help you out just be careful

then find a way to get into a school.. offer some type of barter.. or try to find a college class that you might be able to jump in with.. or a wrestling team club might do the same..

my club would never turn someone away if they wanted to learn but couldnt afford it

if you want post your area or pm me and imight be able to help find an instructor that would work something out.. you never know..

good luck
