Is it overtraining to do a sets of squats every second day?

I would say go for it. See if it works for you. You might get a little strength or a little size or you might make a big improvement in both. Just make sure you change your routine every 3 to 6 weeks because you'll plaute. I would say if your worried about overtraining do a three day split such as.
Monday: shoulder db press, upright rows, shrugs, bis and tris
Tuesday: Off
Wednesday: Squats,deads, Calves, abs
Thursday: Off
Friday: Bench, incline, Chins, Rows, forearms
Saturday: off
Sunday: startover or off again
 
I squatted 5 sets (three back two front) every other day ( actually 3 times a week ) gained three inches of leg mas in 3 weeks and added about 60lbs to my five rep squat max only could do it for three weeks though.
