Is bullying that bad?

My son was bullied badly in 6th grade and it was a very frustrating and powerless feeling as a parent. The school could only do so much, the parents were like Blueta said...bullies themselves and eventually I pulled him from that school.

I work on a children's psychiatric unit and outside of the truly mentally ill (psychotic, bi polar etc) I would say at least 80% of our suicide attempts that get admitted cite bullying as one of the factors. This would be for the kids who are making a real attempt and the kids who make a pseudo attempt. It's interesting that often parents are completely unaware of the bullying or have some idea but don't view it nearly as significant as the child does. Not in all cases...just more an observation I've noted over time.

based on your work experience, would you say that bullying is worse or would you say that kids have less coping skills (and ass-beating skills) nowadays compared to back in the day??

just curious, since you have experience in the field.

Neat.

Why not tell the child to hit back? If he's not strong enough, then why not tell him to use a chair? Or a wrench? Or something like that? The average person won't cross a certain line (no, not murder or anything like that). Why not be willing to cross that line?

I think that parents minimize the bullying because their memories of their own experiences are from along time ago.

On a less serious note, so if I fake a mental illness and get transferred to your ward, I'll get to spend more quality 1 / 1 time with you? Excellent.

honestly?? there's no damn bullying nowadays...unless you count the sissy-ass electronic bullying bullshit...and, you need look no further than the boys that are wearing eye makeup and skinny jeans (girl's one's for chrissakes) that they bought at the deb, to school...that shit wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes when i was in school...a (female) teacher acquintance recently told me that she thinks we need to bring back bullying to get rid of some of the nancy-boy bullshit that we have in schools now...bunch of fuggin' freaks walking around, attracting attention to themselves and they are encouraged to do so...not my son! he's enrolled in a sport where the required equipment is a very manly, clingy, nylon/lycra, singlet! :lmao:
Not a libertarian, eh? A person can do whatever the hell they want as long as they don't bother me and don't hamper my quality of life and I don't have to pay for it.

Could you make a comparison to the Slutwalk? It would be terrible if the female teacher, her daughter, her granddaughter got raped if any of them wore something too revealing.

Then again, a female friend of mine who did get raped completely changed her life and vowed never to suffer like that again. Changed her perspective on life immediately.

I know a guy who's son was bullied so bad he pulled him from school. My oldest is a popular football player, and over the last year, has grown to be a pretty big kid. I talked to my son and told him the problems this boy was having. He befriended this kid and when the boy started school he introduced him to other kids creating a network for the boy to turn to if he had any problems.

The boy has been going to my son's school for over a month now and as far as I know he is doing well.

I wonder if we had a big brother system like that in place it would help some of the kids that are getting bullied.

I'm with digi...If my son is ever in a situation where he can no longer take care of himself with a bully I will kick the ever lovin' shit out of his parents.

balee dat

oh, i think she (my teacher friend) was just blowing off a little steam...and she'd had a couple of beers so, i doubt that she was actually advocating physical violence for dressing like a :rainbow: but, i'm sure there is a grain of truth to it...many people are confused and disturbed by the blurring of the various lines that were in place for so many years...and, many of those lines were simply a result of basic, undeniable differences between the sexes...and yes, i'm actually very much a libertarian...you can live however you want, but if you fuck with any of my shit (especially my wife and kids) in the process of "living how you want", i will chop your fucking head off, whip out my cawk and piss down your neck hole.

I know that it's bad for some people, but I don't get why they decided to self harm.

I tell my kids to attack back. Is he bigger then you? Use a chair. Worst case, they're kicked out and they get home schooled or I switch them to private school.

Cause they can't see the forest for the trees. Younger people don't always get the complete picture on life. They think grade school high school is everything. Little do they know the kid teasing the shit out of them is more than likely going to be shine there shoes or close to it in about 10-15 years. Self esteem is a hard thing to teach at any age but it should be a course we take all through life.
