Not for me - I hate those fuckers.

If you have a razor or whatever - can you just buy an iphone off the web, unlock it, stick your SIM card in it - and then use your $40/mth plan as normal with your new iphone???

It can't be that easy is it?

you would have to make sure that it is a gen 1 iphone. the 3g version can be unlocked but must be used with the ATT sim and plan.

You can get a gen 1 for around 200 on ebay, it should come unlocked and ready to go. Just insert your old sim card and you should be good to go. Yes it is that easy.

I am right. I didn't save my contacts or write them down. My phone crapped out so I went to buy the Iphone thinking my contacts would be there. WRONG they don't use sim so I was out of luck.

Unless the new iphone's don't have sim cards - you got screwed over.

Now as for using your razor SIM card in your iphone - I've read you get "Incorrect SIM Card" error or something. Apparently you have to go to chinese people on craigslist to use iactivitor or 'back to jail' software program or something to get it working with your old sim/cell account.

I don't know people I am no tech nerd. :chomp: I just know that I didnt put my sim in here and the shit still works.
 
you can download the unlocking software for free of the internet. The process couldn't be any simpler. Just plug in the iphone to your computer, click unlock.

I'm using mine with a rogers pay as you go sim.

so one can take the sim card of a razor (eg: rogers) and throw it in a iphone 1st gen, activate using software/itunes - and away you go using your old plan/number?

Yes, you can. But the first generation is data intensive. Do you have an unlimited data plan?
 
Are there any risks if you buy an 'already activated 8gb 1st gen' used iphone? Or one should always buy a new unactivated one?

Are you still under contract for the other iPhone? If not, then don't worry about it. The concern is still the amount of data that is required to run it efficiently and the SIM card that it's linked with.

My local grocery bought some and I've been eating it every night. It's basically a small cheesecake (the size of a styrofoam cup) and it's a no name brand. It's about $1.50 CDN and 100 cals.

Now, if I could stop eating so many of them.... :D

not for me - for another family member who won't listen to my 'iphones suck' argument.

most likely buy an iphone 8gb from craigslist. But the risk of buying it and not being to activate it? Is there a risk?

All of yous are now automatically part of my 'halo3 internet warriors' fan club.

No risk in buying a used iphone that has previously been activated. Assuming it's not broken. You'll be able to unlock it fine.

If you plan on using the internet or email on the iphone, outside of wifi range, you should get a data plan. Data fees add up quick. You can also turn the data services off, so that you won't be charged by accident if you don't have a data plan.

Here's the quickest way to WIN that argument. Take the family member to an Apple store and get them to play with the demo model.

While they're playing with the demo model, ask them to type out the following message quickly:

"The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog. Why are they doing this?! Who knows?"

Have them notice how shitty a touch screen really is. For the best part, ask them to highlight it and copy it into a note.

what's the diff between 'activate' and 'unlock'? Can you get a used iphone that has both???

I can type faster on the touch screen than I could using any other phone. I wouldn't be surprised if I could type as fast with it as I can with a full size keyboard. That's probably an exaggeration but i have no problems typing a full length email. If I had to guess I type around 30 WPM on it. (edit, just ran a typing test and came up with 28 WPM, with 1 error).

There is a lot of iphone hate in the world, if you want just a phone that it's probably not for you.

But if you want something that can, make calls, send txt, send email, organize your life, take pictures, play music, play video, play games, IM, calculator, maps, weather, note pad, youtube, stocks, to do list, surf internet, radio, draw, read documents, remote control............. Then you will be hard pressed to find something that can do all this and functions as smoothly as the iphone.

To each his own.

I do all those things with my HTC Touch. I've had touch screens for years starting with the Palm 3 and now with the HTC Touch. I've always done better and faster with a keyboard. I can't stand the non-tactile feedback.

I have the Touch because of the plan, but I'm planning to switch to a keyboard phone at the end of the year.

However, as you said, chacun à son goût!

yes they do use a sim...your contacts are stored initunes not the sim card
 
get a used iphone...unlocked or not doesnt matter
go to howardforums for step by step instructions on how to unlock
it is a easy process, you plug it in...click a few options and it unlocks and your allset...
remember when you unlock your iphhone you do not ever update it through itunes...there will be a process you must do to upgrade if you ever choose to...howardforums will have all info you need!very simple
