Increased my Deads!

I've only been deadlifting for about 2 years and not consistently until about 3 months ago. Last night I started with my regular 225x8 then upped it to 315x6. Was feelin pretty good so I decided to try 50 more pounds. Was able to get up for 3 reps without gloves or straps (forgot them at home). Actually it was 2 clean reps, put the weight down, got pissed off, then lifte one more. Then, because I wasn't totally satisfied, had my partner drop set me back to 315 and did 4 more reps.

Overall, I felt really good, but I didn't even think about this til today...

Are dropsets for Deadlifts a good or bad idea? I like to dropset a lot on bodybuilding lifts to push my muscles to failure, but deads are a powerlift. Am I overdoing it or is this okay or even beneficial?

Nice job on moving up in weight. Personally I wouldn't suggest doing drop sets on deads. The more reps you do consecutively the more chance there is for your form to break down. Also I like to drop the weight reset and do it again for reps instead of holding the bar the whole time. That way I can stay focused on the form.

oh no, I definitely put the weight down first before dropping the weight. I'd be crazy to hold up the weight the whole time! thanks for the advice.

By dropping the weight I mean just that letting it go from the top so it falls to the floor. Doing reps many people hold onto the bar the whole time and just come down and touch the floor and go again.

Oh I see. Yeah actually, that's how I do them as well. Wouldn't resetting after each rep burn you out quicker though?

No because you aren't doing a negative phase so you are actually saving energy by dropping the weight. Make sure your gym is ok with it before you start throwing weights around the floor :chomp:

I read somewhere that there is no benefit as far as strength gains are concerned of doing drop sets. For eg, ur main set is 350x5 reps for 3 sets. Then you go on to do 310x5 , no strength benefits are made. Probably only good for a cardio or GPP.
