I'm Back! Look Out!

I've made the decision to hit the competitions again. Look out all you old farts - Blazer is back!

I will be your ego killer!

1st up, I am out to prove that Kansas' Strongest Man is really from Wisconsin. I'm bringing the extra sharp cheddar and passing it around! And someone better call the ambulance now, because if I don't win, you better bet that the only way they are getting me out of there in on a stretcher, because I left everything I had on the floor.

The serious training started today. No more fucking around. Everybody better stand the fuck back for their own safety! No more "just keeping in shape." Its time to let the beast out of the cage!

To paraphrase Mr. Ali, I am going to kill myself in the gym to live the rest of my life as a champion!

video the events!

I might be too busy loading stones to also old a camera, but I'll try. ;)

Hopefully there will be someone there at least taking pictures or filming.

Watching me use the crushed skulls of my competitors as traction under my shoes while I run with the yoke would be good to get on tape.

Ooh look at me,....I'm old and strong and ready to kick some ass.....

One day old man, I'll have what it takes to smoke your ass.

Did you forget to take your meds again?

Can you imagine me on Halo or Cheque Drops?

I have just decided that my retirement from competition has gone on long enough. I may not be powerlifting anymore, but I can still compete - and do it with much more fun toys. If Odd Haugen can still hold his own so can I!

I may be old, but I am strong as hell and still able to move. Ive got one of the best strongmen in the world as a best friend and longtime training partner, and I have more will than a Mack Truck.

I have been thinking about this for a few months. Yesterday I made the decision.

I would rather die in a squat rack or on the floor of a competition than anywhere else (except maybe really deep underwater but that is another obsession all together).

All I know is that I am back. No more chickenshit routines and playing around. Its old school training time. Nothing but blood and sweat and maybe puke on the bar.

So far Kansas, Wisconsin, and Connecticut are in pen. Others may include Washington state, Texas and potentially one in Hawaii.

I really only want to do no more than 4 contests; maybe 5 at the most if the spacing is right and I'm not too beat up.

If in fact I don't bring the title back to Colorado with me. Barring the unforseen I'll meet you there.

So what are you aiming to do for your training?

I need to work on some very specific things. In no particular order:

1) My O2 depletion endurance. My anaerobic capacity has gone down the toilet.

2) I need to get times down for yoke and stones. The yoke issue is a result of some knee stabilization problems that I haven't been able to find an answer for yet, and the stones apply to the above.

3) Recovery of a lift is on the list too. For example, if I have to do an axle clean & press, and things in the clean go wrong I want to be able to convert to a continental much sooner and save the lift.

Other than those specifics, I am going to be chasing even better form for events, and trying to put more on all of my lifts in general.

The Kansas comp is actually pretty light and I picked it as a come back event specifically because of that. Hopefully it will show me where more weakness is without a lot a risk.

Very cool! We can share tacky!

B-

Definitely, can share the tacky, I also have a pretty good vidcam that I'll be bringing. This will be my third shot at the Kansas strongest man. Have gotten hurt both previous trips actually had to withdraw last time. So my primary goal is to finish strong. I really like the events.

As far as your yolk troubles here's something you can try if you haven't already. Basically use your hips to move you forward and keep your knees basically locked the whole time. Watch vids of Savickas doing yolk and you can see he barely moves his knees at all but yet flies down the course. Karlsen and a few others do it this was as well.

I was going to work on that exact method this weekend. Sort of like "floating" across the floor. Bergmann is really good at it too.

I have to say that I find strongman much more challenging than PLing. People don't realize just how technical the events really are. I know that I didn't. It will also show you in a real hurry where your weak spots are. I can honestly say I was really good at the big three lifts, but when I went SM I found out that in reality I was not only a pussy, but stupid as hell too.

I'm glad you'll be there. It's going to be nice to have someone there other than my wife that I know - especially another competitor. I'm glad you're still with the young guys and not up with us at the adult diaper (masters) division.

Do you prefer Elite or Jack Tack so I know what to bring. ;)

Care to expound on the highlighted statement?

I would have liked to see your PL logs, too.

SM requires a ton more strength in places that PLing doesn't even touch. For a moment, think about the complexities of one of the favorites, the Atlas Stones. There is nothing in PLing that even comes close to that. Same with yoke runs farmers walk, fingal fingers, etc, etc. Now put some of those events into a medley, and you really can see what I mean.

And when I say I was/am stupid as hell, it is because I have had a very hard time putting those athletic mechanics into my head. Can I muscle around a bunch of SM implements? Sure. But can I do them with any type of speed or grace like you see on TV or with the guys I train with? Hell no. Not even close. Hopefully that will come in time.

Yeah I got my ass handed to me by a 240lb stone in my first comp. Whereas last time I got to do the stones I nearly killed one of the spotters by overshooting the 330lb stone(had to reach out and grab it before it hit him)lol.

It's always good to know people at the comp especially when tacky is involved(i'll bring the WD-40). Never tried the Jack Tack but the elite works well and the old original rheband stuff was great.

I actually like using WD-40, gets the job done then acts like mechanics cologne.:D

That is hard to beat. Dissolve-It leaves you with that wonderful citrus aroma. But I like smelling more like I was just working on a tractor rather than peeling oranges.

BTW, I really worked on your "hips" suggestion for the yoke yesterday. Between that, and using a good running shoe instead of Chuck Taylors made a huge difference. I flew (well sort of) across the ground, my knees were more stable, and my IT band didn't feel like it was shearing off.

Now to work out the kinks on the keg press. That is not an even I have done before. Odd objects, a stone, etc, but never a keg. It is a different press, that's for sure. It sure tests your core stability - more than any other press I have done.
