Last week the world of professional bodybuilding lost one of its most dedicated bodybuilders. Hans Hopstaken of Monrovia California passed away last week due to complication from kidney failure. He was a good friend and mentor. Hans placed 4th in the Master Olympia in 2000 and 5th in the 2001 Master O'. There are few people that I hold in such high regard. You can visit his website at www.hanshopstaken.com or www.master-your-body.com. Hans once wrote “WE MAKE THE BEST PATH WITHIN THE BOUNDS OF OUR OWN RULES, AND LIVE WITH THE OUTCOME”. He was always the soft-spoken courteous giant and he will be missed.

Rest in Peace

Wow, that's a shame. Is his passing away attributed to AS use (kidney failure)? How many years was he using AS's? Any history of kidney problems prior to use? Any idea of the quantities he was taking? I know this is personal stuff, but I am sure he would like to help anyone in the right direction at this point. I do have my concerns, and don't want to trade my life for my BB goals. It's a tough call.

The reasons relating to his death were personal. Hans once told me it's not how you die but how you lived. Hans got more out of the 44 years he was alive that most people that live to be 100. Take the time to read his biography http://www.master-your-body.com/bio.htm.

Typical excuse from fucked up people...
Show a little respect you piece of shit. Sorry to hear about your friend 21inch_arms. My deepest condolensces to you and his family.

Sorry about that 44 is awfully early to go .... its very unfortunate but some of this may come with the territory of bodybuilding. This makes me reflect on my own mortality and the wisdom I have chosen in starting my first cycle. As long as you are informed, and medicine keeps advancing, things become safer.

This wouldn't piss me off so much if it didn't say "7 posts" next to this name. Obviously it is one of the regulars who is too cowardly to use his real name. You're pitiful, asshole.

just read his bio from the link you provided, true he died early but atleast he acheived his goals and was happy in life alltogether:angel:

That is a real shame my friend,

sounds like he was a wonderful person,

hopefully he is with the Lord and at complete peace.

I will say a prayer for both of you.

I just read his bio, that is a piece of work in itself and I learned a lot, he accomplished a lot and was happy throughout his older years. Many condolences to your loss of a friend and his girlfriend and her child.

Sorry for him.

I was just wondering about the many bbers who's had kidney problems.

I am approaching my forties and, when I ate a lot of proteins, I had some lab tests who showed kidney "stress", so to speak.
I then reduced my protein intake and all tests returned to normal in a few months.

There is much writing about the possible danger of high protein diets, and the final statement, so far, is that "in healthy people, they are generally safe".

It is anyway peculiar that we have so many kidney failures in the high protein bb world.

It is a shame and crime for someone to die at that age, especially after working so hard to perfect their body, BUT, think of this..... He is in heaven now, and probably one of the best looking up there too!! I hope I look half as good as him when I die. My condolences.

A sad day for Bodybuilding

Hans had a truely remarkable physique. I've seen him many times on the pages of Flex and other publications. He almost won the Master's O a couple of years ago (and probably should have). He was truely making his presence known at the master's level. My prayers are for him.
