We learn it growing up. To must people who use those terms in anger or disgust, it's the same as any other cuss word. You've answered your own question. Some people use the Lord's name in vain because they don't believe in Him, and therefore don't have any reason not to.

to me it is just a phrase.
like some people say "sexier than socks on a rooster" - which makes no sense at all - they have just learned it in association with certain mental/physical reactions after hearing others say it in the same situations.
same with "the lord's" name.

Yes, I know. That's where the whole story loses me quite frankly. I respect your devotions though brother. I just hope you have the same respect for those of us who havn't yet "seen the light" so to speak. I actually want to believe in all of that stuff. The problem with me though is twofold: 1. I was raised Roman Catholic, and went to Catholic School all my life where they pretty much BEAT that shit into your head, and any questioning of their teachings are simply blasphemous. In other words, you are just supposed to take their word for it. Being extremely limited in the naivite' department, I had a hard time doing that to say the least. 2. I've never seen any signifigant evidence that would make me believe that anything associated with Jesus AFTER the cruicifiction is anything more than fiction bro. No offense.
