icing after working out

I was wondering if icing your muscles after a workout helped recovery.

Does icing sore muscles ie chest 2 days after the lift help recovery? Or is it just reducing the pain?
 
I have heard about this but didn't look much into it. I've heard that pro athletes will sit in 55gal. drums of ice water after workouts or practice to aid in recovery.
 
I live to sit in a hot tub or in the steam room after a workout while i'm drinking my protien/creatine shake. Works wonderful for me :)
