Learn spanish first as a base to all the latin languages

It is quite hard, not that similar to Spanish and will take a lot of committment and dedication. The best way to do it would be to hang around Italian speaking people. You will not learn otherwise.
Hanging around them would take you around 6-12 months to understand 80% of a conversation...
Of course everyone's learning ability is different.

What do you already speak?
Spanish has some Arabic stuff in it but the basics, how the verbs work and how you put together a sentence, all that will carry over. Coming at Italian from Portuguese is a little easier than from Spanish.
Cool thing about learning almost any language is that it teaches you more about how English works, too.
