we totally would adopt a cat. in fact, we even went to our local animal shelter this weekend to check them out.

but we really cannot adopt a regular cat. i am far too allergic to them to do so. if i wasn't, i wouldn't even think twice about playing these games with these fanatics.

i don't think these are genetically engineered. it's just a certain breed (siberians) that do not produce that protein.

Okay, you need to understand that what you have is DEGREES of expression in non genetically modified cats and no guarantees you won't react. But if they are only going for $900 they are not the genetically modified, hypoallergenic cats. I strongly, strongly urge you to not spend your money until you spend at least a few hours with the animal and seeing if you react to it later. If you get both dermatologic and respiratory reactions you may be reacting to more than one protein.

How much hassle is it to use meds to render yourself compatible with normal cats?

well, they have hypoallergenic cats that don't produce a certain protein that most people are allergic to. sounds great, right? wrong.

these fucking cats are $900 each...for a cat! i could maybe understand paying that much for a really awesome dog...but a cat? come on, now.

so, i was like, 'sure, go get one...but you better breed the damn thing at least once to get our money back.' and herein lies the problem. every last breeder makes you sign a contract saying you will have the cat spayed/neutered and you won't breed it. you even have to send in a copy of the vet work as verification.

and these are breeders nationwide.

i'm not that fond of cats...but i hate monopolies more. how could i go about breaking up their little party without getting sued in the process?

these people are simply taking advantage of people with allergies and price gouging them as a result.

fuck that. $900 for cats that breed like rabbits, anyway. Seriously cats multiply like CRAZY. Plus, they are an enormous pain in the ass. Hey, if your gf wants one, it's her money, though. Let her waste it. You can go to the pound and get one of 3 billion kitties for free...lol.

BTW a vet told me these Hypoallergic cats don't really help with allergies.

Poink, you really don't want to get into the animal breeding business. Been there, done that (my mother in law owned a very large championship cattery). Believe me on this Anybody who says there's big money in breeding animals has never done it. Anything that you have to feed, provide medical care for and that takes up your time and a goodly amount of the space in your home does NOT generate a substantial profit. Besides, it's messy (to begin with, ALL tom cats spray like hell), and it requires you to be pragmatic without being cruel.

Just get a normal cat and rough it out. In a years time, I bet you won't be allergic to it anymore.

That is what happened to me. I was allergic to cats all my life. Got married, got a cat - poof allergies went away.

It is like you body gets used to it and says, fuck it, I am not fighting that battle anymore.
