So I've always had breathing problems (deviated septum) and breath mostly through my mouth, even though I've had surgery I still have the same problem and ever since a little girl I snore, well lately it's gotten worse, my husband usually pokes me for me to wake up while he sleeps again or pokes me so I'll role to my side, says it's still bad on my side but at least it's a bit better, I'm working on of course losing weight but I was wondering if any of you have encountered anything to help alleviate snoring, I tried those nasal strips and they help a bit but not significantly, my husband told me that sometimes I stop breathing and gasp for air, I told my sister and she said as a child I did the same thing and she would get scared when i DIDN'T snore because of it.... I'm afraid it might be sleep apnea.... fml.....

Any advice?

Typically sleep specialists are either pulmonologists or neurologists with additional training in sleep disorders. To evaluate for sleep apnea, they typically do what is generically referred to a "sleep study" which can range from a portable test that you do at home to spending the night at the sleep center to be evaluated. You really should see somebody because true sleep apnea can have all sorts of gnarly effects besides inconveniencing the hubby. Sometimes it really is as simple as the position of your head and neck while you sleep, but other times, it is not so easy to correct and requires a cpap machine in order to maintain a patent airway. HTH. You can pay me in karmas.

I snore in certain positions, too (poor Chris).

The not breathing thing is scary though, that would freak me out.

that's cuz of the way you use your pillows and tuck your chin sometimes. it looks terribly uncomfy, I dont know how you people sleep on your back.

Husband has a CPAP. Chris is on the money. You need to see a sleep specialist.

When you do a polysomnogram they plug you into oxygen monitoring, ECG, EKG, and video monitor you all night while you (try) to sleep. If your oxygen sats drop precipitously, they put you on CPAP, rarely that night, usually you get titrated another night. CPAP titration is a real treat. Trust me on this, schedule it the night before a day off if at all possible.

I'd turn your husband onto these if you can:

You get used to them, I've gotten to the point that I miss them if I don't have them in and I don't sleep as well.

It's trippy to watch. My husband has sleep apnea PLUS rhythmic movement disorder. He'd snore, stop breathing for a good 30 seconds or more (I've counted) then his head would start rocking side to side and he'd start breathing again.

The ear plugs resolved the snoring, but we went through two beds before we got the Tempurpedic. When we first moved in together he used to wake me up 10 or more times a night that I remembered. Now that he has the CPAP we're both sleeping WAY better, he still feels really weird with it but he's starting to see positive results (losing weight without really trying).

I've seen a sleep clinic nearby but dont know WTF they do exactly... what kind of DR should I seek?

I'd start with your primary care physician, he'll be able to refer you to a specialist if he can't satisfy your needs.

Yeah my husband was using earplugs but misplaced them and the dog got them... :worried:
However before just buying him a new pair I wanted to ask for advice because the snoring is so loud sometimes I wake MYSELF up....

Thank you VERY much MM and Chris for the info :)

Just pretend you're a fighter pilot. PUT THAT MASK BACK ON COUGAR! THAT'S AN ORDER!

oh my wife would LOVE that...i'm weird enough in bed already :lmao:

what did you think of my pm? is that just a strange co-inky-dink or do you think it could be something environmental...or omg! my kids! LOL that's the only other thing we have in common.

oh! tYEAH, pm coming back in a few min.

but seriously, if i needed to wear a cpap, i would wear a helmet to bed too that had maverick taped out in electrical tape on the front. I remember when I was in high school and I got an MRI to check my melon, I pretended I was an astronaut when they shoved me in the tube. It was fun. (no nerdvirg)

i'd never make it as an astronaut...i get trippy sometimes just laying under my jeep, and it's lifted about 4 inches and has big ass tires on it...i'm ok as long as i'm concentrating on something, but when i stop to think about something and realize i'm laying under a friggin' car, i gotta roll out and take a break once in a while...close quarters ain't my cup-o-tea.

lift it higher!!!!!

have the same problem. was gonna get a sleep study done, because i definitely have a mild form of sleep apnea. I snore like a chainsaw

health insurance lapsed and i needed a stupid referral for the pulmonary doctors joint anyways, which would have taken forever.

Then i found this......

Amazon.com: Stop Snoring Mouth Piece - Anti Snore Device Sleep Apnea Cessation Aid: Health & Personal Care

was skeptical, but it really works. i read the reviews first and then gave it a shot. it eliminated most of my snoring and i sleep 1000x better. just got to make sure you mold it correctly so your bottom jaw is going forward and aligned with your top

my snoring is basically non existent now i'm told, and i feel like i actually slept. i feel refreshed after sleeping now instead of groggy every single day

I referred a patient who had mild OSA (didnt qualify for cpap) for a custom dental appliance. I dont think he followed up tho.

custom dental appliances are like $200-300. this one costs $20 and is pretty decent for the price. you have to replace this one like every 5-6 months or so, but still not bad.

btw, arabian going after you now with his psychoness? LOL

lol I just noticed that. I think he means "let's go"

Nan - have had the same problem since I was a small child.

One year I gave my wife a snoring surgery for her birthday present. That and I got tired of waking up on international flights with the entire business section wanting to kick my ass.

Here are a couple of observations/ comments:

1) sleeping machines suck - don't know how anyone can sleep with a mask on blowing air down your throat. I stayed 12 hrs at the hospital with that strapped on - the nurse kept coming in saying " you going to sleep" which I answered not until you take this F(*(&#$# mask off my face

2) there is some radio wave treatment they can give you that is not cheap and does not last

3) I went for surgery. HURT beyond belief. They cut that little punching bag off as well as several other incisions. You can not imagine how much you use your throat until it is sliced to shit and I am male so it would be much worse for females or pick3.

4) It is wearing off, I am going to have to go back in for tune up or get another bedroom for the bride.

5) Weight does not really have anything to do with it for me. I probably had 4% body fat when I got that surgury.

rapid weight gain is the primary factor in OSA. neck circumference 17 inches or greater is another factor.

A custom dental appliance for $200-300 would be a smokin deal. Try $1000-1200. They work well for mild OSA cases. It's still a matter of getting it adjusted properly so that it doesn't hurt or give you headaches.

As for CPAP, you get used to the mask. Though I still get the red mark on the bridge of my nose. I think it's permanent now. There are different types/makes of masks available though. Again, it's a matter of trying different masks and finding the one that fits you, suits your needs, and is comfortable enough to wear throughout the night and allows the CPAP to perform properly.

Surgeries hurt like hell and they all will "wear off" after a period of time. Think of the skin on your face and neck. As we age, that skin begins to sag. You can get a facelift, but in ten years you'll need another one. Same thing for the inside of your mouth/throat (soft palate). I'd hate to have to go through that amount of pain every ten or so years. Have fun Bill!

Nan, go see your doc. He will refer you to (probably) a pulmonologist. You will fill out a questionnaire, and he will likely set you up for a sleep study (like chris said, at home or in a lab). Based on the data from that, he will recommend the next course of action. Your insurance should cover at least a good portion of this assuming it's halfway decent.

OSA can lead to many health issues, even death. Go see your doctor and get that referral.

I dont have a Dr here yet, guess I'm going to have to find one, havent needed one in the almost year here, my insurance will cover 100% AFTER I meet the $2000 deductible :worried:

2,000 dollar deductible is nothing compared to developing permanent disability secondary to left sided heart failure secondary to right sided heart failure secondary to pulmonary hypertension secondary to obstructive sleep apnea secondary to knot wanting to spend 2 grand. Just sayin.

I'm de3finitely gonna go regardless of the money, I actually purposely selected that plan because there was one with a $500 but was only covered 80% of all charges, I prefer to cough up $2000 and then get 100% covered after that, I'min the middle of buying a house once I know how much my monthly pmts are gonna be I'll get my shit together and got to the Dr.
