Perhaps my thinking is only applicable to those already at their genetic potential? I really don't want to go through my old books.....

If you are at your genetic potential, you shouldn't be able to gain any pure muscle weight naturally!

There are so many variables involved in training that to say there is a definite outcome of 3, 5 or 10lbs gained per year might be inaccurate. There may be an average of what someone can gain comparable to other past lifters in the same situation: however, there is the real possibility you can gain more (or less) than what is considered average.

It would almost be the same as saying if it rains in California 50 times a year, then Texas should also get 50 rain days.

I trained a 17yr old several yrs back, i put him on a diet and heavy weight training and within the year he blew up 32 pounds of pure muscle his bench at the start was 118lns he finished at 405.

Yes! Its possible to put on 30 pounds of muscle in a year,
I highly Doubt this could apply to someone in their late twenties or thirties tho.

Allright I got into a discussion with one of my friends about the most muuscle someone can put on in a year, naturaly. He claimed it was possible to put on as much as 10lbs in a year, I disagreed. From the few nutrition and pathophsiology courses I've taken I destinctly remember reading that the most muscle someone can NATURALY pu on in a year is 3-5lbs and any other weight gain is attributed to either water or fat. Can someone back me on this?

In 1995 I put on 10 lbs naturally in a year. I believe it is possible. But I was very skinny and not anywhere near my natural limits so it wasn't that hard. If you are near your natural limits I don;t think it will be possible. So I guess the answer is "it depends"

I admit! It beat anything i've ever seen, Goes to show even at that age the body's natural Test product and plenty of good Food and a rigid training regimen, amazing things can happen.

I went from 130 to 205 in 1 yr
yes i did add fat but there is no way i dint gain more then 10 lbs of muscle

i started out benchin 85 lbs
ended benching 225 and deadlifting 405

I went from 140 lbs to 195 lbs in my first 2 years of lifting in high school, my junior and senior year. It was easy back then to make gains like that naturally, but now with my conditioning there is noway I could put on 10lbs of muscle on in a year naturally.
