I must be getting old...

Or just really insensitive. I dunno.

I mentioned the other day that someone up the street from me was killed. It was in this thread.

I even got to be on TV, talking about how it was the last run-down, ghetto house on the street.

A couple days later, they do a "memorial service" which consisted of a bunch of ratty stuffed animals around a tree, and some cheap ass candles lined up on a curb. I thought that was bad enough.

Tonight, I get home, and the news trucks are back. A bunch of kids are skipping around, and I can't tell what's going on. I watch for a bit and realize that it's ANOTHER memorial for this guy that died.

Now I will freely admit that it's a tragedy that this guy got stabbed. Damn shame.

However, that said...when I die, I damn sure do NOT want to be memorialized with shitty stuffed animals, cheap candles, and some fucked up gathering on a front lawn that people are attending apparently only because they get to be on TV.

This guy dies, and his memorial is some shoe polish writing on the back of an '86 Cutlass and a hooptie primered Saturn?

I don't think they even sang Kum By Ya.

I want a good ol' wake when I die ,every one parties and sends me off, oh and to be cremated via a bonfire on a viking ship.

I think it would be worse to die and not be remembered or mourned at all.

I think I'd rather be forgotten.

But y'know, I also realize my friends would do something a little more classy.

They're convinced I'm going to be the one to die in some sort of a bizarre accident, so I have no doubt they'll do something fun to commemorate my life.

I think it'd be cool for my teammates to wear my initials on the sleeve of their bench shirt or something, kinda like the patches they use in baseball when a teammate dies.

I'll engrave your initials with a "RIP" on one of my computers.

Oh don't worry dear. I'm sure they'll find some way to celebrate your untimely demise.

Guys are wearing those here. I saw some today.

I don't care if I have a big sendoff. Throughout my life, I have had the opportunity to be an positive influence on many people. I just hope that once in a while they say "I remember him, he taught me to ____".

BTW, I am old.

A few weeks ago, one of the guys I worked with back home died of a heart attack, same age as me. He was always an Ass. Always...
I sure don't want to be remembered like that.
