I am shopping for a car that I can drive right away on the cheap. I'm mostly shopping on craigslist. Last night I saw a post for a 1987 Porsche 924s for $500 that was just published an hour ago. It has a blown head gasket. The 924 is effectively a 944 with a slightly thinner body. It was considered the entry-level Porsche and is the model that rescued Porsche from the brink of bankruptcy.
I called him and he said four people had already called him. He said to call back today at around 10 am cos he was going out.
I arranged to borrow a car by giving a friend a ride to work at 7 am and went back to bed. I got up at 10, called him, and went over. The guy was super cool and everything checked out--clean title, lots of extras, body and interior in great condition, new tires, etc.
As a kid I had posters of Porsches. Lately I never, ever thought I would ever own one--I mean I'm not going to make a million being a one-man mechanic shop/computer consultant.
The idea of owning it definitely took over and excited me. However looking at the car I know that I could part it out over eBay for way more than $500 if it goes that route. Heck, based on the interest, I could flip it on eBay motors for at least double--this guy wanted to get rid of the car FAST. I had also researched the car and found that a complete gasket set for a head gasket job is $171 from my local auto parts store. So I could even fix it up and sell it for many times the cost. Then of course there's the dream scenario of fixing it up and driving it myself!
I was lucky enough on the timing and then made sure I was able to follow-through. There are a lot of flakes who respond to cl and I made sure to follow up as promised and brought the cash with me so I could make a strong offer. I also made sure he simply signed the title so I could flip it if needed without the cost of re-titling or registering or whatever.
I paid $85 to tow it to my house and what can I say? I OWN A PORSCHE! I already got my first "Is that you? Oh shit! NIIICE!"
I just thought I'd share--it seems to ridiculous that I feel like I need to tell people in order to verify that it's really true.
I hope I don't come across as bragging too much. It's just surreal to look at the hood and see the Porsche shield and know it's mine.
