Not my "human" best friend, but my real best friend...my beloved Golden Retriever "Moose."
For the last 13 3/4 years, Moose has been by my side through thick and thin. He has never once let me down. He was always glad to see me. There was never any question whether or not the love I gave him was given back in return--tenfold.
I've had a dog since as far back as I can remember, and I can remember every one of their names. Every one has been a great dog (which I believe has more to do with the owner than the dog itself), but Moose was the "special one"...the kind of dog every dog owner hopes to some day share their life with.
My veterinarian has verbally complimented me on him every time she's seen him. His groomer has stated on more than one occasion that Moose (and his now heartbroken housemate "Punkin'", my female Golden Retriever) was the best-behaved and friendliest dog they'd ever worked with.
And now he is gone.
And I am devastated.
I can't even look out into the back yard without my eyes welling up with tears.
If you're not a dog (or for that matter, any animal) lover, then I don't expect you to understand. If you are an animal lover, than you probably do understand.
They're not just pets, they're family...which for me, is something I have precious little of.
The last 13 3/4 years of my life were made that much more enjoyable by Moose, and I am eternally grateful.
Some of you may have seen the following--it's called "Rainbow Bridge".
I can only pray this is how it will be;
"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Goodbye buddy. I only wish I could have loved you more.
Don't ask me why I posted this here. Hell, no one here even knows me, and I'm sure most could care less about my dog. I guess I just needed to tell a little corner of the world that I'd lost my best buddy.
OK, it's time for me to stop. I can't even see my monitor anymore.
If you have a pet...ANY pet...give them a hug and let them know you love them. Then give them an extra hug from me.
