I Hate My Cheat Days!!!

I am trying to get my bodyfat lower for the summer and have been following a strict keto diet. I cycle 6-10 days on and one day of high carbs or binging. However, the last couple of carb loads I have not been getting the satisfaction from. I am beginning to feel mentally like I am not doing myself any good and physically I am feeling more lathargic. I am beginning to hate my cheat days. Could I go longer w/out the cheat to stay in ketosis b/c I thought you had to carb load to keep your metabolism elevated.

The cheat day, or more specifically the carb loading phase of your diet isn't optional. You don't do is so much for the metabolic boost, though you do get one. The main reason you do it is because once you're in ketosis and burn all of your muscle glycogen how are you supposed to have any energy to workout? Once muscle glycogen is depleted your workouts will basically suck. The once a week carbload/refeed/cheat day is to replenish glycogen stores with the added benefit of restoring leptin levels.

The only people who should skip carb loading are the couch potato dieters who don't do any weight training therefore don't need muscle glycogen stores to be full. You are the first person I've ever heard complain about the carb loading. If they cause you so much trouble then don't go as crazy with carbs.

What s weird about cheat days for me is that I look foward to them all week long and when they finally get here I get let down. I've realized that the longer I go eating clean the less my body tolerates junk food.

The past year has been one long cheat day for me :D

The keto-diet made me feel like shit! It was fine for the first two weeks but that third week I felt real bad!! No CHO to go through the blood-brain-barrier.
I cheat half the year and the other half I am very strict.

Mack, I too enjoy dieting with a keto type diet and experience the lathargy on a carb up day. Here is where I part ways with Dr Atkins and other no carb guys...
You are on a keto diet and you are going to have a cup of coffee. Dr Atkins would have you believe that you should put two ounces of heavy cream in your coffee because it contains no carbs and this will keep you in ketosis as opposed to putting 4 ounces of skim milk (7 carbs total). Like vegeta wrote this might be a good strategy for an extremely sedentary person but I think it's lunacy for active people like ourselves. It's still of function of total calories taken in and to have 200+ calories in heavy cream instead of 40 calories of skim milk to avoid 7 grams of carbs is missing the mark. I follow a type of modified ketogenic diet that works well for me. I take in approx (here's where the flames begin) 100g of carbs on workout days (50g post-workout) and around 50-75 on non workout days. The reduction in total calories (from not making silly choices like above) will more than compensate for the increased carb intake. Don't be surprised if you only find trace ketones in your morning urine. This will also avoid the need for a carb up DAY. You probably can get away with a carb up meal. Just a suggestion for you mack. It works for me.
