Hunting dog

Anyone ever train a dog for duck, pheasant hunting? Pretty damn difficult. I'm thinking of trying to do it but might try buying one already there so to speak. How much you guys willing to pay for a pretty well trained young (2 year old or less) versatile dog like a lab? Some of the more exotic breeds can be pretty $$$.

I haven't seen anything under 1000$ for a trained dog (including lab).

It's pricey, as you probably know it is a pain in the ass to train a dog. I had a golden retriever and trained her myself. She was older so I couldn't do a perfect job. I went out and shot a duck, cut off the wings and tied it to a stuffed sock, and then trained her to fallow the falling "duck", wait and the retrieve and most impostant to give it back. It took a lot of time and I would not do it again.

As a Pro retiever trainer my opinion would be, it would be a great learning experience for both of you.

If you chose to just purchase a trained dog find a good trainer and get shopping.

Pricey, divide the $ of the dog into his lifetime and your pleasure lets just say $2500 for dog divided by 12 to 15 year = your pleasure = priceless.

If you can get a pup from good hunting stock, it shouldnt be that difficult to train. My choclate lab pup is 10 months old now, took him hunting for the first time 2 weeks ago during our 2nd duck seaseon. He did well, even located a downed bird in the phragmities bout 30 yards behind the blind. Anyhow, start with the basic commands.....sit, stay, heel, come.....everything else revolves around those commands. As for my choice of breed....labs. They are incredibly smart and absolutly love the water. Now, if you live in the north, or upper mid west where tempertures get very cold, go with a cheesie......more difficult to train, but they fear no weather. Good luck
