we use "gotomypc" at work. or in work. whatev.

When i asked for an account, the office manager asked the IT guy's assistant to set it up for me and now I can access my work computer from home.

so once i got to work and something looked different than how i had left it, i thought.
then yesterday the assistant (who is also in sales) said that he was logged into my computer over the weekend, at 3am on sunday, because he needed something from the server and knew my password, so he used my account/computer.

well i don't like that. I leave work up and don't want anyone messing with it, or restarting my computer, or reading my email, etc.
Tonight I changed my password.

I know it won't be long before he tries to log in again (he doesn't do anything all day and often stays in the office overnight or logs during the night but we don't know why) and won't be able to. he's going to ask if i changed my password.

how would you say it? "I didn't like you logging in to my computer"?
or should I just say, "oh, you should get your own account. it's not going to work if you have to use mine."

or "i'm sorry, i'm really into privacy."

I would just be honest, explain as politely as possible why it bothers you and ask him if he wouldn't getting his own log in/password.

Yep, ditto!

i was going to be honest, but I don't know the right way to say it without sounding like I distrust him.

i'm not sure if i do trust him, but even if i totally did, it's not good to have other people use it. i'm management level. he isn't.

(btw, this is the guy i saw on the toilet).

i think i'll just say, "i changed my password. you should get your own account though- then you won't have to use mine" and leave it at that..

Maybe, it's not a bad idea for him to know he's not trust worthy.

Regardless of trust issues - a saleperson should NOT have access to management files.

So no matter the details - removing his access is the right thing.

Thats unacceptable. That shit would never fly at my work.

I think he totally lied to you too. There's no reason he would need to be on your computer at that time. I think he probably got some sensitive information off your computer. Check and see if you can see what exactly he looked at.

Bring it up to the head of IT ASAP

yeah, his sales teammates immediately said, "CHANGE YOUR PW" the minute he left the room.
i probably wouldn't care if i really thought he just needed something once, but he's gone on once that he told me about, once that I suspect, and who knows when else. in the middle of the night.
and he doesn't seem to actually DO any work.
i'll tell him.
thanks.

why does he know your PW? thats a security issue (it is at least where I work)
Id just say, hey we arent supposed to shared passwords, and change yours

Tell him you are an executive mod
He'll then proceed to sauce his pants and spill his guts about looking for nudes of your dogs.

tell him it's IT policy and that you wish to be in full compliance. also, if he's brown-skinned, he should realize he's not to be trusted.

as a backup, you could inform him that you have pulled over 315 with chalk only, and that his shady ass needs to recognize.

lol this is good shit right here

he uses the executive crapper when he's not an exec. He should have his own password (and most likely does) but he knows your password and uses it to log into your computer. No telling what else he's done that's shady...and yet you don't want him to think that you don't trust him?

I'd fucking tell him straight up that you don't trust him, it's a privacy issue and probably against policy for him to use your password (that's why everyone is issued their own), and that since he didn't have your permission, you will be letting his supervisor know.

First, find out what info he got off your computer. You shouldn't have anything incriminating on your work pc that could get you fired. If you don't then just skip this step and tell him to fuck off and go to his boss. Get his ass fired.

How can he login to your computer at home? Turn it off! Also yeah change your pw.

You got some software runnig that allows remote connections etc. with a password? Make it 1 way only. When you're not being paid, it's your HOME computer. Just tell him you don't want people logging into your computer w/o asking you. Most IT depts I know call the person asking if it's okay now to login if they have to. Usually it's corporate policy.

lol at no one else trusting this guy. what's his deal?

also, if he's performing IT-related shit, and specifically the one who set up an account for you...doesn't it stand to reason that he's done it before and should probably have his own fucking set of remote login accounts/permissions?

why could he credibly or legitimately need to go into your pc using your account?

slap him on that fruity mouth of his.

i like the second one, thats awesome. he will either be like ummmm ok....or play the tough guy and be like well i have to know everyones passwords sorry.

I would simply tell him a bullshit story that bhappened at your last office how some went into someone's else's computer The end result was one of them being fired...

I would hate to come off like I was trying to hide something on there though

Agreed, that is a security issue, regardless of the reason of them knowing. What if something went wrong, you are only to blame. Be strong like you are and stand your ground and just tell them that.

won't he just be able to get your new password like it's nothing? work computers are company property, along with anything on them, so you don't really have any sort of legitimate gripe. sucks :whatever:

there's nothing on my computer at all, other than my email. he's also at work all night sometimes, with nothing to show for it. I close my office door, but don't shut off my computer. today i'm going to put a password on it.

i can't tell him it's IT policy... he is IT (assistant).
He was asked to set up my account, so of course he knows my PW.

he's eye-talian, so not brown skinned, but not trustworthy either (i kid!)

no no... he logged into my WORK pc from His home. i leave it on so i can work from home.
I don't think i have anything on there, but i don't need him looking at my email or history.

Yeah, that really shady, girl......

Okay.....I work in the IT dept myself and I would be fired in two seconds for doing that if I did not have your permission to be on your system. The comment about the system being "Company Property" actually validates my point because then I would be using your computer against company policy because I did not have your permission to be on it. Regardless of your position in any company most companies dictate a level of privacy for the users and only use systems with the users full knowledge. HR and IT management are very attentive to this rule because users can file a grievances that can get very messy.....and have on occasion.

cool. thanks.
I also put a password on my screensaver. I'm not sure if that will do anything, other than tell me if he restarts my computer when he's here late at night.

You lock the system when you leave for the night right? If you have changed the password you should be good for inside and outside access protection. I know we don't have access to user password in the IT Dept....so unless the user gives it out.......no one knows what it is.

Ask for company policy - 90% of half-decnet companies, show some respect and ask users "can i logon to your computer now, or after work and install/fix x,y,z?" etc.

But companies DO have the right to enter the computer if it's deemed real important. BUt it has to be real important.

Always use personal emails for personal emails btw.

That is what I would say. You don't really owe him any explaination. As a professional, he should know better.

Very clearly say "If you log onto my PC one more time, I will cut your balls off"

yup, for sure.
i wanted to know what to say ahead of time, because this could be one of those times when you're put on the spot and end up saying WAY too much.:)

Whatever you do, interpretive dance is the only way to really deliver the message.
