How to stop pets from going on the carpet?

Since we have moved to South Florida, our dog insists on doing number one and two on the rug. She never did this when we lived in Tampa. She is 7 years old.

I don't know why she started, but suddenly she is doing it every time we leave home.

Is there something I can buy to spray on the rug to discourage her from doing it?

I prefer to use positive reinforcement. Every time she doesn't shit on the carpet, she doesn't get kicked in the head. It's a very humane method.

Did you just move? Your dog is stressed because of new surroundings and you leave. Animals really react to stress.

Talk to a vet, they do make doggies prozac:D

What starfish said.

My dad used to rub Tilly's nose in her shit when she accidentally went on the carpet. He's lucky I couldn't have taken him back then. That's fucked up. :bawling:

RIP Tilly.

Dogs are pack animals. You are it's pack:D. That is why so many dogs get really destructive or do things when you leave. It really stresses them out.

Reinforce your dog. But you have to do it EXACTLY when he does what you want him to do. Otherwise, he has no clue what you are asking.. Punishing him is pointless.

Arf Arf!!

Starfish is a cutie with brains!!

Also with the new environment, this is her way of trying to cope.

Yes Amy, there are sprays that you can buy. Its a great idea because the smell tells the dog that this is the place to do its business . It now associates that spot with bathroom time. The spray gets rid of the smell and covers it with something different.
