How to keep a grappler off of you?

i meant that he should be jabbing before the guy shoots in.

most people underestimate the power of a true jab if you can land one before the guy sets up to shoot in there is a good chance you can land a 2nd and keep it in striking range as long as possible.

if he is shooting in after he moves only a few inches a punch isnt going to stop him from coming in and you will quickly be forced to grapple. knees, elbows or other strikes might still be effective.

Now I get it.

If you talking about keeping a grappler off of you in a street fight with no rules then I would just attack his groin believe me it usually works because they dont expect that. But if you talking sparring or tournaments then the sprawl will be your best bet as it usually gives the stand up fighter another chance to stand back up and bang. Also one neglected aspect of training is foot work practice the foot work the sprawl and even the hits to the groin and you should have a better chance of keeping a grappler off of you.

I'm actually less worried about it now
I seem to grapple fine
from top anyway
on my back I'm iffy but nothing to panic over
generally when people shoot on me now I want to drop back and roll to mount on them

What's this scenario look like, how would it be arranged?

Are we talking about a BJJ guy who is standing at arms length who you then close in on and attack his groin?

Or are you talking about when the BJJ guy shoots in and is barreling in on you with his head down and level with your waist?

And what's your favorite way of attacking the groin? With a leg or an uppercut? If the guys taller than you, an uppercut might work real good, as long as you're close enough and you can get the first shot off. All hypothetical I know, but still good food for thought...

Man, if you think BJJ shoots are a PITA, you should see some San Shou take downs from the clinch. They FLING guys away. If it was concrete, that will send the opponent to the hospital. Damn, now I sound like Djimbe.

Wich is why I say that that type of training is more Realistic !

SPRAWL!!! Yeah, you just got to start rolling on those mats and start getting the feel of a grappler. No easy way around it, brother. Experience is the best remedy for your situation. I kickboxed down in Ft. Benning, GA for a while and really liked striking...and then realized that I needed to start studying Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling to keep those pesky grapplers off me. Now when the fight goes to the ground, I surpise them with a solid guard. Good luck!
