how often to work out

how often a week should you work out? i am working out 5 times a week and i rest on mondays and wednesday. Is this okay and i work out for a bout an hour to an hour and 30 minutes. Also I want to get more mass and more weight with definition so is it better to go real heavy and do less reps or is it better to do a lighter weight and do more reps?
 
Probably you should post your routine, goals, type of diet you are following, if you are, your stats, how long have you been working out, etc.
You will get more feedback.
You can also spend some time reading, you will find lots of threads discussing this issue.

i work out chest back and arms one day then i alternate to shoulders arms and chest every other day and i take 2 days out of the week to rest which is monday and wednesday. I'm 5'6 and i'm 135 at the lightest and somtimes when i eat i weigh as much as 140 but it seems like i don't keep tha weight.

I want to try to gain more weight and mass yet be somewhat cut like i want bigger arms a bigger frame and pecs,etc.

As far as my diet i try to eat as many meals a day I eat like cereal and protein shake lunch i eat chicken rice and a variety of vegetables then dinner i eat chicken vegetables , rice and fruit and after that i have a protein shake.
I basically eat healthy and i don't just eat meat.

So what can i do to my routine to get better results?

Check out the diet board for diet ideas. You should probably be taking in more calories.
