How often do you take pain medication?

cheesecake

New member
I've never been one to take a lot of medicine. In fact, I can't stand to take medicine or to go to the doctor.

However, since I've started training again, I find myself taking pain medication more frequently, especially for my lower back.

I'm just curious to see how often everyone else takes pain medication.

to each their own.......... after the blue grass contest Lord Suston walked up to me to present the worlds largest bottle of ibprofruen, to which i gladly took 5........lol

and spatts then told me she doesnt take ibprofreun.

i take it when i need it.......... im just like you bud, we were raised the same way. you have to beat me to get me to go to the doctor. but when training, i do what will make me perform my best.

but for you low back problem, i would probably recommend icey hot before i would pain medication.

AND PUT THE DAMN PILLOW UNDER YOURLEGS WHEN YOU SLEEP!!!!

A few years back, I would take ibuprofen every lifting day. It started to get really hard on my stomach and I did some research on all the side effects that continuous use could have. So I quit taking it except if I was in a lot of pain. It's only recently that I have discovered the value of ice :) I also have a prescription for Vioxx and Bextra, but I take those only when I need them. I only use ibuprofen for headaches now (which means I rarely take it).

I've been taking Bextra for the last 3 days for my bicep tendonitis, but I have also been icing it every day.

As I type this, I am sitting with an ice pack on my back. I'm alternating between it and a heating pad.

Oh the things we do to ourselves. :fro:

Good, good, good!!

I have an athletic trainer friend who we would all go to if anything hurt. That was pretty much her first recommendation... ice. Then after the initial hurt was over, alternate ice and heat like you are doing.

You guys are in this much pain on a regular basis? That just don't sound right!
It's just an old nagging injury that flares up from time to time.

It probably comes from years of having bad posture.

Going a little off topic: Do you think it is about time to look at the cause of the injury and treading that rather than the effects. If its your lower back what about tight Hams, weak abs or Hip flexors, is your pelvis alighnment correct etc. etc.

my lower back hurts sometimes too. i tried vioxx and it didnt help a whole lot. after bluegrass i tried those things at wal mart that wrap around your back and heat up and they work wonders and they last bout 12-15 hrs or so. i love em. usually tyolenol or ib doesnt do a whole lot for me. i havent really found a medicine that works on my pain. i am starting to take something to help the joints out now tho..hopefully that helps with the reoccuring shoulder pain.

Could be the problem. Tight Hams are going to prevent you from maintaining a safe arch in your lower back when you squat down or bend at the waist because it will affect the way your hips move.

Get someone to hold a long stick or broom handle against your back when you in the standing position. There should be room for a hand to fit between the stick and the arch in your lower back. Slowly bend forward that the waist, this hand gap should be maintained all the way down. Alternatively, stand side on to a mirror and do the same move. Your hips should not start to move until your upper body hits 45 degrees.

This is a really complex subject. My sister is a PT and is doing a qualification with the Paul Chek Institute (www.paulchekseminars.com check out the articles). She had some videos that I watched called “Scientific Back Training”. The stuff they where talking about on this subject blew me away!

See a chiropractor/ART practitioner.
I probably eventually will.

I didn't mean for this to turn into a thread about my back problems. I was just curious how often everyone took some type of pain medication.

i would see a chiro myself, i never need pain meds to train. i also get weekly adjustments. considering my roommate is a chiropractor, it is easy:)

cheesecake... a week off after maxing probably would have helped you out greatly.

your back is getting stronger... but still needs rest

I am realizing this now. I probably should have listened to the advice of pwr_machine and bigguns15 who suggested this.

I may take next week off.

My medication needs are a little different then yours. I average about 6 acetaminophen a day. I have continual headaches that are on the verge of migraine. I used to take Ibuprofen which is an anti-inflamitory, but the doctor told me that when you take it too often, your body begins to need it and it will actually cause you pain so that it gets the drug. Strange, but true.
I have also used it for my right elbow(baseball) and my shoulder(lifting). Most pitchers live on advil. Luckily I have had no back problems "yet".

Vioxx is not good, Vioxx has some pretty severe renal toxicity. The selective cox2 inhibitors are overrated and overpushed on doctors by drug reps. Aspirin is a cox1 and cox2 inhibitor and gets the job done, if you get it in buffered form it will be easier on your stomach in addition to reducing risk of some forms of cancer.

I don't know about vioxx side effects, but I do know it works well for me. It works faster than bextra but I feel like bextra works better over a long period. Just personal observations...

as far as your questions Cheesecake, I rarely if ever take otc pain relief meds. I just don't need them I guess. When I truely injure myself I usually get a script for loritab and take it, but other than that I rarely take advil, or aspirin, or alleve. I just don't get much out of the otc's....ice and stim or if its possible, ice and ar work better for me.

I take ibuprofen a few times a week, sometimes not. I found(I know alot will roll their eyes here) that when I was struggling putting weight on I would smoke some pot 3 times a week and that helped my stress, helped me eat more and it seemed like I never needed to take any aspirin or ibuprofen. When I stopped a few weeks later I had all the old aches and pains popping up again.

  only three times a week....and you call yourself an athlete;)

Haven't for some time, lol, been busy with beer, which imo is alot worse.

I was prescribed some mega-ibuprofen several years ago because of constant back pain. I was supposed to take it 3 times a day every day, but I couldn't bring myself to do it (I do use it, however, for cramps!). Now that I deal with stress better, exercise more and got 4 lbs of breast removed, I don't need it. :)

Well, after thinking about this all day and then talking with puttinbuttin tonight, we decided to take a little time off from the gym.

We're going to rest and recover the rest of this week and then we'll be back in the gym at the beginning of next week.

My back should have plenty of time to recover by then.
