How much of a PITA is it to replace the fuel pump?

I'm having a problem with the car stalling out the first time I try to crank it in the morning. After the first try, it'll start up but the engine sounds very sluggish while idling. Once I take off, it's fine. I guess it stalled out the other day on my wife also while idling at a stop light. Since it's been a while since I gave her a good tune up, I figured I'd do the little things first to see if that works.

Today I'm replacing: Spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, thermostat, synthetic oil/filter, plus I'm spraying somce carb cleaner into the air intake to see if that works. Last week, the battery died so the battery is new and I also added a complete fuel system cleaner to see if the injectors were dirty.

If all else fails, I guess I'm looking at a fuel pump replacement which I have never done before but have heard it's a PITA. ANyone have experience doing this? It's a 93 mustang 5.0

i might be wrong but check the fuel pump relay..before replacing your fuel pump...not sure if your fuel pump is in tank or not...

check out one of the mustang boards on line for techincal help...

if its a drop in like hondas, lift up back seat cushion to access the fuel pump...undo the wires, pull fuel pump out and drop in new fuel pump...wire back up and good to go..

i have the 89 mustang gt bro and i changed mine out. but yea check the relay first then drop the fuel tank. its just 2 bolts and the straps that hold it up come down but the tank is heavy especially if you have fuel in it. try to get all the fuel out before you drop the tank to make it easy on you. or just have someone help you drop it. but its just 2 bolts. after you drop the tank there will be 2 sets of wires and 2 tubes attached to the tank. on set of wires is for the sender unit that tells you the fuel level and the other set is for the fuel pump. the 2 tubes has clips on the at the fuel pump. take the clips off and then the tubes come off. now there will be fuel in the tubes but not a lot so you will get fuel on you. its inevitable. then you can take the tank out from under the car. the fuel pump is internal. i have a spare stock fuel pump if you want. i can sell it to you cheaper than the autoparts store. its like $100 in the store. i changed mine because i put a high performance one in with high flow. but if you want the stock i can sell you the old one for like $50. let me know.

Doesn't sound liek a fuel pump problem to me. This is a fairly common 5.0 problem. Check www.corral.net. Plenty of good guys over there.

I'm willing to bet it's a mass air sensor problem (or the comp. circuit that controls the mass air sensor).

Hmm that would suck if it's the MAF as I remember I had to replace the one on my old probe and it was expensive as hell

hey man, take it to a shop. you can dump a shit ton of cash playn a guessin game. the shop has the shit to tell you whats up.fix it your self.but have them check it out.

You may end up saving money by having a shop look at it rather than "shotgunning" parts at it.
