A "standard cap" is the cap that comes on those general purpose plastic bottles you can get a Tap Plastics. The cap holds exactly 5ml. The Tap Plastics bottles are recommended because they are type 2 solvent-resistant plastic. GHB can dissolve other kinds of plastic!
The dose you should take for recreational use depends on several factors. One is the strength and type of G you have. Your G might be GHB, or it might be one of the precursors, GBL or BDO (both of which work similarly to GHB when ingested). It also will be watered down based on how your source mixes it. Another major factor is how recently you last ate and what you ate. Having a tummy full of carbs will prevent the G from hitting very hard, if at all.
So you need to "calibrate" your G to your body. Here's one way to do it.
Set aside one night before bed to do an experiment. Eat an early, light dinner. Wait at least 3 hours for your food to digest, leaving 1-2 hours before bedtime for the experiment. At the designated time, take a known safe quantity of G and immediately take note of two things: the time, and the exact size of your dose.
Then go do something relaxing (like watch TV, listen to music or surf the Web) to pass the time. The G should start hitting in about 15 minutes and should peak between 45 minutes to an hour later. At the peak, take note of how you feel. Was there a strong euphoria or was it mild? Did you feel muscle twitches (actually little spasms)? Did sound/music sound enhanced? Did you feel sleepy?
A "partying" dose is the lowest dose that causes the nice effects with only moderate side effects, but not so high that you feel overwhelmingly sleepy. You should be able to talk, and your speech might be slurred, but you should not be totally out of it. You should be able to walk, and may feel a little dizzy and lightheaded, but should not fall over.
If you feel overwhelmingly sleepy or feel like you just need to sit down and pass out, hit the bed and write it off. Your dose was too high (unless, of course, you are trying to use G as a sleeping aid). Get some sleep.
Based on your first night's experiment, you can try again a couple nights later with a higher or lower dose.
Once you have tried a few different doses you will know what is the optimum dose for you. Remember that dose and use the exact same dose every time.
If you want to know how to safely take additional doses (say you are clubbing), here is a rule of thumb that seems to work reliably for the professional partiers.
1. To begin the night, take 100% of your known safe dose, and note the exact time.
2. Exactly 2 hours later, take 80% of your first dose, and no more.
3. Exactly 2 hours later (4 hours after the first dose) take 70% of your first dose, and no more.
That should allow you to stay high on G for up to 6 hours, say at a club, without G'ing out. Be disciplined, don't alter the rules, and pre-measure all your G for the night so there is no uncertainty while at the club.
