How much does it really cost to compete?

Okay so I am planning on competing in October as some of you may know. And I am trying to figure out roughly how much everything will cost so I can be prepared for it. Plus I would like to find out how much it really costs to be a top competitor.

Basically the bottom line.....

How much money would I need to transform this baseball player, and two left feet gal into a pro rated competitor?

I am going to start some research today to figure it out.... Any help from you ladies and gents is greatly appreciated....
like the suits ~500
trainer ~500 per month
food bill....
supplements....
tanning....
dance classes...
gymnastics...
EVERYTHING...

if you can chime in on what things will be needed that is also greatly appreciated...

Dance and gymnastics lessons for figure? Don't need that. You'll learn more at Barbizon than you will at dance and gymnastics for figure.
Food is food so if you eat a good diet that's the same whether you compete or not.
Supplements - Subject dear to my heart - Usually $100/month
Tanning - Most of the girls I know, or sponsor, only tan for a show and many don't even do that. They just use protan.
Suits - This can be done both ways. The $500 customs suits or the $100 off the rack. I've seen both win because the judges, for the most part, are not fashion critics and don't know the difference. But some girls "feel better" in a custom suit so that may have some value.
Trainer - This one is like the suit. Many girls use trainers to take the pressure off of themselves but really don't need one once they've competed once or twice. Since you said to be a "Top Competitor" I would say this expense is needed in the beginning of your quest but not throughout. It's simply not that complicated. If your trainer shows you how to train, look in the mirror, and do quarter turns, you about finished. Assuming you already know how to diet.

Compete in what?

Trainer - $500-1000
Food-- $300/month +
Suits - figure - $5-800, bb - $300
Shoes - $70
NPC card - $75
Show application - $50
gym membership - $30/month
protan - 3 bottles off the intenet - $18x 3
tanning - $40/month
OTC supps - $100-200 /month
other supps - depends on u or not
Travel & lodging for an out of town show

Generally seems like $2-3K.

2 suits can be anywhere from $300 - $1000
My trainer is $100 down + $40 everytime I see him - I'm figuring around $500 to prep me for my shows
Food: I spend $60-70 every 2 weeks at Costco for chicken, eggs, broccoli, etc + grocery bills --> whatever that is ($5-$15/week for produce)
Tanning -- $35 a month for me
Nails -- For me Free (a friend) but normally you'd get a French manicure + tips then fills every 2 weeks
Makeup -- you need stage makeup - Like MAC (get it off ebay, it's cheaper)
Jewelry - For Figure you can wear a bracelet & earrings -- I spent $25 at Claire's for mine
Supps -- a LOT
Protan + brushes + gloves -- I get it locally for $16
Shoes - Mine were $85 for 2 pair
Gym: $73 a month for hubby & me
BB morning show suit - Mine was $22

I assumed she meant figure sassy

I was assuming that also.....

Also -- Gas + Hotel + amenties at the hotel (like a fridge) if you're travelling to a show.....

Competitor & Organizational Fees -- Each organization charges a join fee + a fee to enter the show, sometimes a fee for each category......Check the org. website for details on that.....

I just found out Frank Zane does personal training close to my home... that is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cool!!!

i put a call into his office, if he doesn't train for fitness I am sure he knows someone really good in the area!!!.....

OMG FREAKIN GOD!!! I just spoke to frank zane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am freakin shaking right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

he is SOOOOOOOOOO NICE!!!!

LOL same w/ BB (FBB). Its such a weird sport. All the really satisfying and "challenging" stuff of a sport (BB & fitness) are going away and its turning into a beauty pageant w/ muscle.

I dunno.

Anyway, yes I accounted for both BB & figure in my estimate. But those are roughly your requirements.

Hi, i compete in fitness and something i didn't anticipate in the budget the first time around was some extra $$$ for massage therapy and physio...should you get injured along the way (hopefully not) but even without injury, having a deep-tissue massage here & there can really help!! :)

VERY VALID POINT! Esp when you are doing the flying splits & what not. (I'm too old for that. I'd have to budget for a walker and orthopedic shoes too...)

Court just be aware with fitness how demanding and stressfull it is on your body, if you have any sort of injuries now or chronace pain you will after a few short months of training for fitness. Why are is fitness dying people wonder? You try jumping around like the do for 3 minutes at like 6-9% bf. I would have to say fitness is the most diffcult out of the 3 womans options.

okay so here is the running tally so far...

okay so this fist is per month

supplements $350 <that includes vitamins protein powders everything
tanning $40
Training $500
Food $300
Nails $100
Gym $40
Gas $100
Massage $100
Car $200
Cell $80
Internet $45
brings the total to $1855 per month I dont have rent I do work around the house and take care of my roommate for that... Also the training should get cheaper after a couple of months when I start to feel more comfortable....

Okay and the extras for the comp
Suits $1000
Shoes $100
Make-up $200
NPC Card $75
Show app $50
Protan 3 $54
Travel $?
so to get started would be like $1479

but after the first show would only cost around 200 per show without travel

hmmm..... now of course that is an over budget because I would rather plan to have more money set away then not enough..

Did I miss anything?

so to do the show in October I would need 5565 for the monthly expenses... plus the 1479 for the comp...etc

bring the grand total to $7044
Wow.... but really because I really dont have any other expenses because I am the biggest nerd.. its not so bad... Okay now that I have all this together I have to write up a business plan and hopefully my sponser comes through....

In my experience, the first time you compete you have the most expenses be sure that your shoes and suits fit the competition judgement criteria and that you really like them. Of course, you can buy different ones for the next ones but the expense gets much lower after that.

Also, I always include in the competition extras:
* latex gloves 3-4 pairs (to apply protan)
* exfoliation cream #.. (depending on which one you use)

yeah forgot those... how could I forget about my hair...
I will need it cut and dye once in that 3 month period so thats another $100 plus at least $60 for the day of the show for an up-do and at least $50 for waxing... gloves I can get at the mortuary... and I better add in 50 per month for my skin care needs...
thanks ladies... its pretty crazy when you start adding this stuff up isn't it

You're welcome girlie :)

Yes it is, that's why I'm so thankful for my suit sponsor 1 cost I don't have to worry about for next season.

I'm going to do 6 shows next season, so I need to think of some ways to come up with the money, lol.

Does this mean I will see you at a car wash? LOL
