How long does it take to see results?

Ghandiman

New member
ive been working out hard for over 3 months now, and i feel like im not seeing enough results for the amount of time im putting in at the gym. I started weighing 155 and im now up to 165, but my bf has gone up too. Im just wondering how long it will take before i see noticable results? Does it take longer than i think and im just in a rush to get there?

There are lots of variables...

1) What's your diet like?
2) What kind of training are you doing?
3) How old are you?
4) What are your goals? Size? Strength?

What is your workout schedule, cause i overtrained for like 5 months when i first started liftin and saw like 5 lbs of gains, and i didnt eat right. Now i have a set diet, low in fat, and i dont overtrain anymore, and in 3 months i have gained 17 lbs of lean mass, and my strength has gone way up....

im 17 years old, and my current diet is something along the lines of this:
Breakfast - 5 whole eags and some oatmeal and oJ (i always have this)
Lunch - 1/2 pound turkey breast or roast beef, Cottage double, some nuts
More cottage cheese before workout
Currently, I am training one body a day:
Arms and shoulder mon; legs tues;off weds; back thurs; chest friday
Protein shake when i come home
High protein dinner and another shake b4 bed
My goals are mainly size, although strenght is always a benefit :)
A special note to spatts: Thanks for all your advice, i think u have responded to every post that i have made. Your very knowledgable and i really appreciate you takign the time to help out a newbie like me!

Get some carbs...you're a growin boy! Are you playing any sports in addition to this?

What do you do when you train? Sets? Reps? How long are you sore, and which muscles are sore longest/shortest?

Cardio?

Im a newbie too, and these guys will prolly clarify everything for you, but you should try doin 2 parts a day, and workin 3 days a week. Mine is
Mon-Chest/triceps
Wed-Back/Biceps
Fri-legs/shoulders

and i take both weekend days off, its worked for me....But you should do what you see the most benefits from, and if something doesnt work, change it....... Try goin to IntenseWorkout.com there are some workout splits in there and some other advice for newbies...........

when i train i usually do 3 sets/ about 8-10 reps. My shoulders never get sore, legs are sore for a good 4 days. Back is usually sore for 2, chest for 3 if i get a good pump. bis and tris are equal, soreness starts fading at end of second day.

Im not playing any sports or doing cardio because i am trying to gain as mmuch mass as possible,,, but i dont wanna get fat.

it seems 90% of the time.......the answer to these types of questions is, "you're not eating enough"

I would also add that it can be very difficult to see your own gains.
You might not see it yourself, but when others start to make comments, you know that you are making progress.

6 weeks

Of course there are so many variables. I saw gains within a month. The first month I lifted was brutal, I had stress responses firing off late at night waking me up taking out my sleep. Needless to say I didn't grow at all. I also had the flu and shit. But when I was fully recovered I gained about 5 lbs in a month (after losing 10 the month before). I really hate cortisol.

patience my son, you must first learn to crawl before you can walk. Just concentrate on all of the variables listed, including perfect form when lifting, and you will eventually reap the benifits. Note.. use a tape measure if you want. If everything else is growing and your waist doesnt enlarge then your on the right path. Now go .........lift , eat, and rest

"im 17 years old..."
you have plenty of time, bro. I dont even think i made noticable gains while in HS. I remember staying at the same weight for like 2.5 yrs. If youre anything like me and the guys i know, you will do most of your noticable bulking after HS. (note: im not saying its impossible to see noticable changes at your age.)

O.K. my 2cents:

Gains in size, shape, composition, or whatever-in my mind, ARE difficult to see. Why? Because we look at ourselves in the mirror every day.

It's like watching the hands on a clock. They never actually move enough to percieve movement and you keep waiting to see that movement and you don't - but then you focus on the numbers and realize it's now 20 min later.

It's like trying to hear what your own voice really sounds like..."Geez, do I sound like that?"

Or, watching your kids grow. Day by day they look the same. Then Uncle Bob, and Aunt Betty show up and haven't seen the kids in two months. All they can do is go on about how much they've grown. You barely noticed except when you tried to fit them into their old PJs.

It's like Sofa G. said. It will find YOU!

I went from about 28% BF down to around 13% or so and the whole time it STILL felt like I was Lard-boy. But all everyone could say was "Holy shit, do have cancer or something? You've lost ALOT of weight!!" Took me quite a while to see it myself.

Results take time bro. Youve been lifting for 3 months. Relax. Reaching your goals takes hard work and dedication. Thats why you see people lifting for a few weeks/months, and just quit because they dont see what they want to see.

have you been working out 3 months your entire life or have you just stepped it up, big difference. I was a freshman @ 5'7 & 160 pounds. I graduated @ 6'2 220 pounds. I had prolly 2-3% less BF as a senior. I ate like a mofo, not always healthy, but I ate atleast 4000cals a day being a 2-3 sport athlete. Lifted on and off for 4 years and not knowing nearly as much as I do now, I made those gains, although im sure most of that just came from growing 7 inches.

Moral of the story, be patient, if you aren't competing in a sport (ie football, lacrosse ), then theres no rush to get big and strong. Keep reading the boards, ive learned more here in 3 months then i did in the previous 4 years & 9 months of lifting.

wow, thanks for the encouragment everyone. I should probly start taking picture like every two months,,, im sure ill notcice bigger changes there than i will looking in the mirror everyday. Just one more question - ive read many times that more muscle requires more food and more rest. Since im just starting out, and im young, would it be possible to hit each muscle hard like twice a week and not overtrain (except for legs, of course). I alwayz feel like m ready to go like 3 days later, expecially shoulders, they are NEVER sore.
