How long does Hernia surgery take you out for?

I think I may have a hernia and I have been doing some reasearching and saw that you have to get surgery to remove it. How long will the surgery prevent me from being in the gym for. Im not to worried about doing things like deadlifts for a while but I mean bench, curls, calf and ab work...... And if I was mid cycle could I just stay on to maintain gains???? Im getting real worried about it because I want to be able to lift. But im at a low bf % so my hernia is easily noticable and very unatractive (even thought its small) . I wish I knew how to post some pics up to show you guys but I don't know how.... ( I have a digi and took some)

If you have a traditional incision you are out for a few weeks. Make sure they do it laproscopy where the instruments are inserted through tiny wholes and you avoid a traditional incision. Most procedures are done this way and the recovery time is a matter of days, instead of weeks. You will still have to be a bit careful with your lifts, but you should be able to resume normally in a few weeks.

You can do some research at the following website. This is the top hernia
surgery clinic in the world. Located in Toronto. Both my father and brother had
their surgeries done here and they were unable to do ANY lifting for about 6 weeks.

Hernia surgeries are not a joke. You want to make sure you give the body time to
heal as hernia's are known to come back very quickly and easily.

Forget about pics. If you think you have one, go to a doctor, walk-in clinic or hospital and get it checked out. You want to be sure 100% and a few digital pictures will not be sufficient.

I've been through the hernia thing. I had mine operated on about 1 1/2 years ago. The doc told me that I could have held off on the surgery as long as it didn't get worse. He said that the risk was having it get twisted and subsequently have the circulation cut off to that section of the intestines. If that were to happen he said i'd be looking at serious health consequence (that's obvious)

I can tell you that post op was quite painful. I had a hell of a time moving for about the first week. Pain was gone in ten days to two weeks. I was advised not to lift anything beyond 20 lbs for six weeks. After that whatever you can handle is fair game. I was back at it at a regular pace at the end of the required six week healing period

From a cosmetic standpoint, I'm glad I had it done. At the time my BF was about 7-8%. When it's that low it sticks out like mofo, rather unsightly.

So, if it's not to big, isn't painful, and isn't getting worse then you can probably keep going until you are ready for the op. Just plan the op around your cycles and be prepared for a six week layoff. You may be able to do some lifting of certain body aprts before then if you are able to focus on isolation exercises. However, you be surprised at how many movements are restricted because of a sore lower abdominal region.

By the way getting out of bed to use the bathroom is a major bitch the first week after. Worst pain I've ever experienced and I tend to tolerate pain very well.
Hope you find something useulf in my post

Good Luck, Bro

I just had hernia surgery. I was able to lift in 3 days! The guy that did mine invented the Shouldice method and has done over 10,000 surgeries personally.
I live in the caribbean and would have went anywhere in the world and this was my pick.

There is great info on hernias at the site. Mine appeared small but was very big when he opened me up.
The pain was nothing - I only took Aleve! I walked out of his office 2 hours after waking up and took a cab to the airport. Very - Very happy I went there. Good luck!

P.S. I had it done 2 weeks ago and I've already started grappling! I'm amazed at how smoothly it went.

my buddy just had his hernia surgery this past tuesday; doc said he is off work for 3 wks; then maybe 1-2 wks before he can hit the gym. also he had the regular cut about 4-5 inches long, so i guess it wasn't the laproscopy way, supa :chomp:

A doctor could handle this better than most but I would guess with a Hernia surgery you would need
at least an 8 week break from at least the heavy stuff.
