It would certainly be better than the fossil fuels we are so heavily dependant on although it is not without its warts as well. Don't like it as a solution because I think we can do better, cheaper, safer, cleaner and more efficient. However, you are correct that it would be better at least from an emission point of view.....

oh, i agree. nuclear energy is not without its pitfalls, but it is a cleaner option as opposed to burning fossil fuels. i agree, hydrogen power is the way to go, but the technology simply isnt here yet.

There isn't any shortage of oil in the Middle East. The OPEC rulers don't even need to drill any more wells. All they need to do is turn the spigots to increase or decrease the flow of oil, which is exactly what they've been doing.

In 1997 they opened the faucets wide to increase the flow of oil and drive oil prices down to historic lows. That had exactly the effect they planned: it discouraged U.S. investors and drillers from exploration, U.S. production was cut back and 30,000 Americans lost their jobs.

Now, in 2000, OPEC turned the faucets down in order to decrease the flow of oil and drive up the price. So Americans, whose domestic production has been curtailed, are paying extra tribute to the OPEC sheiks to the tune of tens of billions of dollars a year.

does the article state any numbers that proves his theory about curtailing production.

We should definitely build refineries on every block and drill in every wilderness we have left. Much better than ridding ourselves of this expensive and environmentally damaging dependancy.

.

i dont think we need a refinery on my block, but running at somewhere close to 95% capacity is not good for our economy. so maybe we should build just a few more refineries.

ok...so let me get this right.. its not the governments job to develop alternative energy and fuel sources but its our governments job to police iraq and or the rest of the friggin world .. please tell me the logic here..what am i missing...?

reasons why the cost in the US is up:

US refineries are already at maximum capacity, and one in california is to close at the end of 2004.

since more than 50% of US gasoline is refined in the gulf coast area, it costs even more due to transporation to various states.

since venezuela is having economic and political problems, due to the castro's good buddy chavez running the show there, oil imports from there dropped from 19% in 2003 to 13%. we were, in fact, importing more oil from them than we were from the suadi's.

and let us not forget the 19 cents federal excise tax and the state sales tax (around 23 cents. give or take, depending on the state in which you live). not to mention, some of the states we live in charge a salex tax on the gas we buy (california)

plus, the US dollar is down, and that isn't helping.

local requirements for various gasoline blends to meet various state requirements means smaller batches, which means more the rest of us have to shell out.

these are not reasons cost are UP, except maybe the venezuela point and the weak dollar, but probably very little. cost are UP because the price of a barrel of crude is up, plain and simple.

1. refineries have been close to capacity for several years and prices have been low. there is no change here to reflect higher prices at the pump now.
2. a majority of refining has always been in the gulf states therefore transprotation has always been a factor. there is no major change here to reflect the higher prices at the pump.
3. venezuela's output is a factor somewhat but very little. last year they were on strike and prices spiked and ohter OPEC nations boosted production and prices stabalized. so in essence in can be satisfactorally delt with. there was no recent change in venezuelas output, therefore it is not a strong factor.
4. has the sales tax change over the last two months to cause a rise in the prices at the pump?

not being a smart ass but just FYI, gasoline is not made in batches. it is a continuous process(24/7). and the regulations most likely have not changed over the last 2 or 3 months to reflect what we are seeing at the pump right now.

the only reason prices at the pump are UP is because the price of crude is UP. why is the price of crude up, fear of production interuption. crude and gasoline is sold as futures. that is the problem(if you call high prices a problem)

im in favor of govt regulations.

and to put these numbers into perspective. and im rough estimating this. we import roughly 10mil barrels a day. 19% of that is 1.9mil. 13% is 1.3 mil. thats a difference of 600K. nothing to sneeze at but probably not contributing to the higher prices at the pump. and i believe other OPEC nations have compensated.

what govt agency or dept. has R&D for alternative fuel sources? but it does have an army.
