How does protein powder effect my diet?

Are you talking about my last post or the post above mine? Originally I took protein daily at the same time every day, except workout days which I take it right after workout and now I'm taking it right before I sleep.

Bro, you've got a lot to learn. Protein isn't just a magic supplement that will help you grow.

You can get the same (if not better) effect through real whole food. You require a certain amount of protein per day to grow. Some people have trouble fitting that much food in their diets, so they add protein powder to replace the food they should be eating instead.

Ideally, 1.5g per lbs of body weight PER DAY. Whey protein will just help you achieve that number. Do a search, there are plenty of bulking guides on the net.

hmm i was confused over why people take protein. I'll research once I'm done with homework in a few hours but what I thought protein did was help me to get thicker arms and body. My goal is to get thicker arms and body because everyone tells me my metabolism is too high. I eat more than my 2 roommates combined daily but they're way thicker than me (one is big and weighs 170 and the other is 150lb), though I'm taller. I don't have the time to eat more than 4 times a day usually but whenever I do i have a PB&J sandwich and whatever the lunchroom is serving but usually a hamburger and chocolate milk for lunch and for breakfast I just have biscuit, an orange, bacon, and grapes.

I thought protein was only used to get the necessary protein for a healthy meal according to the food pyramid, like a food supplement. Lately most of us have been eating 2 meals a day because of class or pre-Thanksgiving projects so I've started to take protein to make up for my loss of food.

Would you happen to have any suggestion on protein usage to help me to stay the same weight/grow?

EDIT: Are you sure on your figures? I read that protein is used to as an add-on that helps you grow by letting you hit how much protein you need a day. A weight trainer told me that I need about 50g protein a day at my weight. Also I researched this and found that a site says .36g/lb is enough:

Please forget everything you ever learned about the food pyramid. That number you quoted, 0.36g/lb, is for SEDENTARY people. For survival and opimum health, couch potatoes must consume that amount.

You my friend, must learn about protein synthesis. When you work out, there are micro leasions and tears in your muscle that are created, to repair itself (thus increasing the amount of muscle fibre and size) you must consume a LOT of protein.

Terms such as thickness, bulkiness or whatever the hell, is atributed to the amount of muscle (or fat for that matter) inside you.

If you want to gain muscle mass, you must consume at least 20x your body weight (lbs) for your daily amount of calories. For example, a 100 lbs person must eat at least 2,000 calories daily to grow.

30% of those calories must come from protein, at 4 calories per gram, that's a lot of protein! so you see why its important to consume so much.

Now this is only scratching the surface of proper nutrition for gaining weight. Read all the threads here, there is lots of good info.

I can't believe no one else is chiming in to help you out. Normally this board is very helpfull. :) I'm afraid I just don't have the time.

food is going to be the most important aspect of putting on some weight. You need to eat as much food as possible, and as often as you can. You should still take your protein, but like stated above, dont count on that to make you big...that;s the job of real food. So eat like a horse, and take your protein at 2 times
1) right after workout, with carbs
2) Right before bed
When i was a skinny kid back in the day, i seriously ate a frozen pizza every night before bed. I packed on a lot of weight, some good some bad...mostly muscle though, b/c like you i had a high metabolism. Hope this helped....good luck

thanks, its great getting advice from someone similar to me. Also did high metabolism go away with age? I was told that as I get older, it'll be so easy to pack on the pounds.

dude im in the exact same position as you, fast metabolism, in college, trying to pack on some more weight, only im 190 at 5'8". i know youll get'r done

the metabolism definitly slows down. But dont worry about that till the time comes, then just adjust your caloric intake. Just stay motivated and educated and it will all work out for you. When i was 16 i weighed 135lbs @ 5'11. thru hard training and lotsa food i hit 215lbs 5'11" by 20 with 14%bf. I was still eating like a pig so i trimmed down the diet a bit and now at 9%bf 205lbs. Just remember, evryone is different so find what works for you. good luck
