staying lean here
I compete and bulking up is not the way to go. I bulked last year on the sea food plus protein diet. At 5'6" I was weighing in at 181 and my arms were above 17". My bodyfat was approaching 14%. By the time I got my shit together for the shows, I had 12 weeks to diet. I still ended up a bantamweight, 143. I did well, but I thought Id end up a lightweight. Basically I had to do way too much cardio to get lean and that ate alot of my muscle. No assistance really hurt too. But I chose to go natty. This year Im eating clean year round. I alternate gaining and hardening phases.
On hardening phases I drop my carb meals to half of what they are on the gaining phase, and drop out the post workout carbs. Only for a few weeks. I usually drop about 2% and start over. Its basically taking 3 steps forward and 1 step back, at least in theory. Im staying around 8%-10%. For me getting fat is just not something Im willing to do. Its fun for a few weeks, then one day I wake up and say why did I take this approach, then it takes twice as long to get back to where I was. I used to do this all the time. Bad cycle of events for me.
As someone who has gone both routes, both do have advantages. I was super strong for my size last year, milk and natty peanut butter in large quatities really jetison my strength. But neither are in my current diet plan as they sit right on the bellybutton. Just my two cents.
