How do you cook brown rice

I'll second the suggestion of a rice cooker. I got one for Christmas and I use it multiple times a week to make rice and steam veggies.

I remember when I was about 18 and I tried to cook rice...I figured fried rice, so you fry it in a pan, right? Well, I tossed it right out the box all hard into a frypan with oil in it...

It took about 5 minutes to realize something was very wrong...

I been boiling it for ever and its still really hard.

With a lot of patience....

It took me a while to figure out those suckers take extra long to cook... now that I read about it, the idea of a rice cooker seems a good one.

really? i thought that was more for wild rice.

Brown rice & wild rice take about the same time..... just remember to check it so all the water doesn't boil off...........

brown and wild rice are one of those foods that SOUND really good but are never as good as you think they will be. brown rice is too grainy and kinda hard even after being thouroughly cooked. wild rice sucks period. for this reason they have never become a diet staple, at least in the US, like good old fashioned white rice.

after reading this thread i decided to buy some brown rice and try it again. cooked it tonight and was quite good, but took OVER an hour to cook. not quite sure why brown rice takes so much longer than white rice.

Because the brown rice grain doesn't have the outer husk stripped off it like the white rice grain does....

I've found cooking it on the stove & in the 'wave gives mixed results. I am very pleased with the results from my rice steamer & now use that esclusively for my rice...
