How accurate are the calipers for BF%

So I got a BF% done at golds gym and the trainer used those big calipers to pinch the fat. How accurate are those for finding BF%? kthxbuy

i think you should be okay unless you have a lot of visceral fat deposits. i don't think the caliper measures that. does it?

it cant

I dunno what the overall precision is, but I'd say it most likely varies widely from the cheap calipers, to more expensive ones too.

i was at 13% which is about right based on height/weight, and how i look in general
time to crank it down to 8% i think.

depends on the calipers, the person doing the skinfold measurements, and how many points the bf test is (the more points, the more accurate)

if you do a 7 point bf test with an experienced person, they're pretty accurate

i love caliper tests.

in highschool we had to get our BF% measured to see how much weight we co uld drop for wrestling

it was like an assembly line of shirtless dudes, and the people doing the tests were all women in their 20's.

she pinched the fat on my tricep and right before she could caliper, i flexed hard and she couldnt get any. i kept doing it to fuck with her till she got mad

The real reasoning behind the question is: I didn't like the results so the fault must lay on the equipment and not my fat ass.

Nice leg shot. I will post mine up when I become plat again..... I got some uscle in my calves popping out everywhere.... kinda trippy to look at for me, since I really don't work them as much as I should.

im in personal training school right now and we have to check each others BF everyday for practice... we also have the hand held BF electronic measuring and we compare the 2 results and they are within 1-2 percent as long as the tests are done correctly. so IMOP i believe it is very accurate... and its not so much the initial reading, thats your baseline, where you go from there is what counts...

electronic measuring sucks....it only works with peopel who dont work out and theres still a 2-3 % margin of error at the min.
my boss was like 5'9 210, 7-8% bf and he would show up at 14-15% on that thing

If it is done properly, then they are very accurate. And yes, the more points used, the more accurate the result. IMHO though, nothing better than pics and since everyone has a digital camera easy to do. What difference does the number on a piece of paper make?

I do get the whole *woo-hoo go me I can see a measured result* thing. Problem is that if there is error than the person having their bf measured could mess with their head. PICS DONT LIE - same outfit - same lighting - same pose.

Even calipers can be off by 3-5% if the person doing it doesn't know what they are doing and if they use a 3 site measurement it's way more.

However, what it does give you is a base line you can work on improving in terms of millimeters. Just like the tape measure - the end result isn't what matters. It's whether or not change has been in the right direction.

Yea thats the method i was going to adopt, get the same trainer to take the BF again using the same caliper and same sites, etc. this initial BF measure was just a baseline to know how im doing in the future.
