Honneestly.. how many hours do you put away at ur 9-5?

It's the nature of the economy right now. Good jobs are now leaving just like the bad jobs used to.

The other problem is productivity.

Businesses have to move forward and that means gains in productivity. There's really only two ways to increase productivity: Either 1) Invest in capital equipment so a unit of labor can produce more product or 2) Simply make a unit of labor do more work.

Considering the grade-A job Barry & Co. have done intimidating businesses and creating uncertainty, they aren't going to be investing in the US anytime soon. That means option (2) is going to be the preferred method of productivity gain for some time.

I just read in CFO magazine that .7% (.7 percent, not 7 percent) of CFO's plan on hiring next year. I know here in NC around 800 people in the UNC system are getting canned. This economy is a nightmare.

I teach 3 classes each semester. One is 100% online. It takes me about 80 hours to set that up from start to finish, I do it in two weeks before the semester and after it is done I probably spend 1-2 hours each week doing things for students etc.

The other two classes take up 6 hours. So that, and the online one, are about 10 hours per week. They force me to have 6 hours of office hours. So I have to work 16 hours a week.

I have to publish and do research and that takes up most of my other time. I spend about 10-30 hours a week on that (do most of it during office hours), it all depends on how I feel. I guess I have a 16-26 hour work week on average, but that does not include faculty meetings, committee meetings etc.

The good thing is I make more than my buddies in law school and work fewer hours with no stress, but a hell of a lot less than my finance docs that went to Wall Street (one friends make over $1 mil last year - fvck, but he works 100 hours a week and is very stressed. His family is in China and they are poor (not anymore) so I am glad he made it, but my hours rock, and I get summers off, and they pay me to travel at least twice a year for conferences and I love traveling. I'm off from Dec 6th to Jan 8th and I can't wait.

Just curious. What was your undergrad (pre-law) major?

Business Admin. I was in the military when I got my undergrad degree. In the end I had 168 or so credit hours lol I had to change my major five or six times because every time I moved I had to repeat classes or I couldn't get them. It was a nightmare. In the end I just wanted to graduate so I went for the BS in business admin. After that I did the MBA (which was nothing but a review of an undergrad major with case studies). JD, missing one class for a MA in Economics, and a PhD in finance. Just because I am a vain asshole like everyone else on here, all of them (except the JD) are 4.0's.

People always ask why the fvck do I have so many degrees, I took classes every chance I could in the military. I thought I was abnormal but a retired COL in my PhD program has me beat by a few degrees, he has a JD, masters in finance and tax, two bachelors, and a PhD in finance, and I think he has an MBA.

Pretty impressive. Do you plan to finish your career in academia?

I don't think so. I did this so I could spend more time with my family while the kids are young. Once kids came around my attitude in life totally changed. I turned down some sweet offers a while back. The top tier schools (which I am not really qualified for right now based on my publications) and 2nd tier require you to publish all the time and in top journals (5% acceptance rates WTF). It is so stressful there and not worth the extra 20-40K.

I hate teaching the same crap over and over though, especially the undergrad ones, MBA classes are fun to teach because I'll do things like get real financial statements from local businesses and use that as the framework for he entire semester and that stuff can be fun.

I am a very aggressive type A personality and although I am happy with the time off I am not really challenged. I have been trying to get a managed futures/currencies fund started and move towards that, right now I am also looking at investment bank and hedge fund jobs. I am going to sell my life away for that and I am not sure if I want to go back to working 80-100 hours a week. Hopefully I can get a small setup done on my own once things settle down with my life.

In the end I want a job with freedom. That is probably the best part of academia.

Have you ever had a female student attempt to better her academic standings by returning favors?

The greatest president in american history, a nobel prize winner, will fix everything. Jesus, will you all stop worrying and have some HOPE!! Besides, for the next 20 years it'll be Bush's fault anyways - until a new generation has no idea what that name is.

lol No. I have had a couple of them flirt with me. I have a Puerto Rican girl this semester that has been laying it on thick. She just wants cock though. She is always stopping by asking for legal advice or crazy hypos, low cut blouses, just gives me that eye. You ever meet a girl and you click and don't even talk to each other. We both felt that after the first class it was so obvious too for both of us. lol She knows I'm married, IMO based on our conversations she doesn't care. She is already running with an A so I know she isn't doing it for the grade. She is a hardcore player that wants FWB.

One girl gave me a gift card at the end of semester with a Starbucks card and her telephone number and said she is available for coffee. And she was smoking hot. She wrote out a long letter too thanking me too (she was deathly afraid of finance).

Even if I were single I wouldn't sleep with my students. I'm very old school conservative in that department.
