Man I hear ya....I work anywhere from 50-60 hours a week and just not really getting anywhere. I started my own business this Jan but with the economy its just not doing what I need it to do. Winter time is when i start to feel like I am just spinning my wheels. Sucks

It's not just me either, I've had a couple of shitty jobs where I didn't do shit. The things is my friends some accountants some engineers are getting slammed as well. They get decent pay i suppose but when you divide it by hours u put in, you're not exactly making as much as you thought. So they resort to drugs. Markets changed, I befriended couple of 30-40 y/o docs, they are too broke to party. All the kids I know that went to shitty law schools, are beyond fucked. In fact there's only one demographic that hasn't been affected much and thats all the Paris Hiltons and my dad is this in that crew. While that doesn't concern me much, I think it's about time for a change, a change we can believe in.

It's the nature of the economy right now. Good jobs are now leaving just like the bad jobs used to.

The other problem is productivity.

Businesses have to move forward and that means gains in productivity. There's really only two ways to increase productivity: Either 1) Invest in capital equipment so a unit of labor can produce more product or 2) Simply make a unit of labor do more work.

Considering the grade-A job Barry & Co. have done intimidating businesses and creating uncertainty, they aren't going to be investing in the US anytime soon. That means option (2) is going to be the preferred method of productivity gain for some time.

I teach 3 classes each semester. One is 100% online. It takes me about 80 hours to set that up from start to finish, I do it in two weeks before the semester and after it is done I probably spend 1-2 hours each week doing things for students etc.

The other two classes take up 6 hours. So that, and the online one, are about 10 hours per week. They force me to have 6 hours of office hours. So I have to work 16 hours a week.

I have to publish and do research and that takes up most of my other time. I spend about 10-30 hours a week on that (do most of it during office hours), it all depends on how I feel. I guess I have a 16-26 hour work week on average, but that does not include faculty meetings, committee meetings etc.

The good thing is I make more than my buddies in law school and work fewer hours with no stress, but a hell of a lot less than my finance docs that went to Wall Street (one friends make over $1 mil last year - fvck, but he works 100 hours a week and is very stressed. His family is in China and they are poor (not anymore) so I am glad he made it, but my hours rock, and I get summers off, and they pay me to travel at least twice a year for conferences and I love traveling. I'm off from Dec 6th to Jan 8th and I can't wait.
