A guy doing lots of volunteer work or helpful things for less-than-handsome pay suggests that he's probably a caring/compassionate/yada yada yada guy. You work for non-profit organization and would like to believe otherwise (I do lots of volunteer work myself so I know how you feel), but women look for security .... and status.

Lets say a chick likes you and another guy almost equally physically, personality-wise, etc ... fuck she can like you even a little more than him even. However, this other guy drives around a Benz, has a fat wallet, and has a high status job. When it comes down to it, she'll choose the other guy over you.
