Manny, I've had a home gym for the last 3 years. I love it. No more waiting for anything. I paid in total about 12K for mine. Fixed dumbells from 3lbs (for my girlfriend) all the way up to 120lbs. They cost a pretty penny, let me tell you.

I would recommend it only if you have enough space. The only thing I really miss that I have no space for is the leg press machine. In time, if you have the right equipment, you learn how to substitute for stuff u don't have.

I would recommend to buy some stuff from Fitness Depot as they have just about everything you need. The thick rubber mats have saved my floor more than once.

If you are into heavy weights, do not, I repeat, do not buy your bench or power rack from them. It's Northern Lights equipment and not too safe at really heavy weight. That was the mistake I made. For those heavy weight pieces, go over to http://www.atlantis-fit.com/
These guys have commercial gym equipment. Super strong but more expenisve. Right before the bridge over the rdp river to go to laval off the 15. I went in, they gave me a brochure and I got to look around.

So what does 12K get a dude these days, as far as home equipment goes bro? That is indeed a pretty penny.

hey musulphreak-
I dont know if this is a good substitute for the leg press you really want, but they make a verticle leg press that is not only economical and gets the job done, but it fits in about a 3x3 space. I bet by just re arranging stuff here and there and shifting things a few inches, you might be able to fit this in without making the room look too cluttered.

I got the basics and it cost me less than 1000.00. I bought a power rack with the safetys for $300.00 (it was an awesome deal, came with the bench and it's better than the one at my gym)
I paid $280.00 for my verticle leg press. $130.00 for my preacher curl station. $200.00 on weight plates of various sizes (sold as a set...Came with bar, dumbell bars) I bought an ez curl bar for $20.00. Found some extra weight plates in the garbage. Took a mirror of a store going out of business. What I got is everything i pretty much need minus a few things I'd like to have.

I joined a gym a few months ago and boy was that a mistake. I hardly go, i lost weight, im too busy to go when theyre open. I miss being able to lift at 2am when Im finally done with all my work. I paid 600 for the year upfront. I am screwed.

Hehe..I understand about training at 2AM. I've done that more than once :)

As for what I have, got me one of those machine stations where u can train the whole body. This is where I do some back, tri's, machine shrugs, standing calf raises and leg extentions. This sucker cost me about $4K. Power rack was about $1K. Mats $70 each and I have 7. Then comes the seated calf raises, preacher curl bench and the multi angled bench (for chest, shoulders).
The dumbells were expensive, I don't know exactly how much in total but the 120lbs cost me about $200. 115lbs a bit less and so on. Olympic bar was $200 and some change. Shorter olympic bar was $130 if I remember correctly. Mirrors, cd radio which i can blast. A variety of bars, cuffs, and of course the basic olympic plates. This is all in Canadian funds btw. I figure in the US you can get this for between 5-7K easily.

Biggest downside to home gyms, besides the lack of space, is not too many spotters are hanging around to help.

VicTusDeuS is there a site where I can check out that verticle leg press machine? I might be able to squeeze it in somewhere.

I don't know of any sites off hand, but if you get a copy of muscle and fitness they always have ad's running in that book. I bought mine at one of their stores in my town, but the prices are the same everywhere. It shouldnt cost you more than $300.00 for it. If you order from that company they dont charge shipping either....but it takes 6-8 weeks.

Ahhh, when I get up at 12 in the afternoon, 2am isnt so late..lol

My friend got a home gym setup from where I bought my legpress. For $1300.00 he got a cage like i did but it has all the attachments on it. All he needs is a leg press and hes all set. We looked at tons of machines and this one was the best value and best equipped.
