HMB supplement benefits may not be so significant for trained athletes

The supplement beta-hydroxy betamethylbutyrate (HMB) has featured many times in the pages of Peak Performance, so here are the latest research findings on this relative newcomer to the market. HMB has been linked with gains in muscular strength and lean body mass in untrained individuals. And researchers from the University of Luton were keen to find out whether it would have similar effects in an athletic population.

Their study involved eight men with experience of resistance training, who completed 45-60 minutes on three days per week for 28 days, supplemented with either HMB or placebo. Post-training checks showed no improvement in 1-RM bench press or in muscular endurance in the men taking HMB and there were no significant differences in fat-free mass between the two groups.

The study suggests that HMB may not offer any performance-enhancing benefits for trained athletes. But watch this space for future developments!

Ouch they were really pushing this as a great thing but it never took off bc of price tag.

HMB actually had some real science behind it. It just didn't pan out in the real world. You'd need to take a bottle a day to get results.

holla

U lads who don't think HMB don't have bonafide scientific proof of how its works for athletes need to properly read some of these studies. I for one will go back and hold to many studies done back in the 80's - 90-s by Bill Phillips outfit EAS magazine. I was in my attic the other day and found me a few copies and just sat down and start refreshing my memories about some of the old products of yesterday. On the contrary the shit works rather well if u ask me. Even reread an old article by Dan Duchaine on Carb cycling, water extraction, proper use of dbol, and hihgh intensity training. Imma take ole school any day.

hav a good day.

You don't a demand for this stuff for a reason. I cannot even remember someone posting a positive log for this stuff.
