I am 5' 10" and weigh 271lbs and i dont look that fat so i assume i have a lot of unused muscle, could be wrong, anyway should i start wightlifting now(what is the best routine to start with for a guy who has never lifted prior to a month ago) and go on a diet( which one you recommend). or should i not go on a diet keep eating the same and start lifting. I really want to get started on this so i would really appreciate any help thanks.

Well, I wouldn't want to tell you to keep eating the same without knowing what your diet is like now.

How old are you? What are your goals? Any idea on your bodyfat?

Is your lifestyle an active or intense one? If not, you probably don't have a lot of "unused muscle".

Check out the sticky at the top of this forum. It will show you various lifting routines. As for your diet - eat 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. If you want to put on mass, multiply your bodyweight by 15. Add 500 to this. Eat that amount daily and you'll gain a pound a week. Do the opposite, and lose a pound a week. Adjust to your needs.

thanks.
I am 22. my goals are basically to get big like needsize's size.
not sure on body fat how can i tell?
my life is not active or intense.
my diet is not a good one i eat whatever there is so i need to change but need some info on whether or not i should try to lose weight and train at the same time or should i keep the size but choose a different diet? because i heard that your muscle does use the fat to build more muscle. is that right?

also i am wondering what is the best for beginning weight training?
i was looking at hst, dc's, and 5x5, any recommendations on which one or the other?

which workout?

I wouldnt recommend something as intense on your joints as the 5*5 for any beginner. One of my closest friends just started training with me on it and he's having joint problems. Instead I'd recommend the 8-15 rep range (most would probably recommend 8-12, but I gained very well as a beginner on 15!).

So maybe Hst is good. As a beginner you dont have to get too scientific to make gains btw. They should just happen. It sounds like your fairly happy with your size, and that will adjust itself over time so you look better anyway. *For now* I'd say just stick with a higher rep programme and increase your protein. Start reading as much as you can about diet and training and adapt your own way.
