It's new car purchasing time.... I want the Ford Escape Hybrid, the wife wants the Nissan Murano..... Any suggestions?

Why Escape Hybrid ? She actually makes more sense than you. I'd pick a FJ Cruiser for the same price.

I want a hybrid - we need a bigger car/SUV, besides the WAY over priced Toyota Highlander and Lexus - it's the only option.

Gotta tell ya - the idea of spending 60 bucks a week on gas doesn't appeal to me.

Hybrid is good for saving gas, But I still would opt with the Nissan before the escape!!!

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is far from being a gas guzzler. It's a 6 inline. Same goes for the Murano with its CVT tranny. The difference in terms of MPG between the 4Cyl Escape and Hybrid isnt really huge. Hybrid makes some sense if you do like 30k miles/year.

We checked out gasmilage.gov or something like that and it rates both SUVs at about 400 miles per tank full of gas. However, the Nissan has a 22 gallon tank and the Ford has a 15 gallon tank. I have a sizable commute in stop and go traffic, so we figured that we would save about 80 bucks a month in gas alone. However, I only get the car for about a year because then babies are born (hopefully) and she gets that car and I get the piece of shit.

I tend to agree with the gieghness factor. The Nissan is a nicer car.

My dad retired from Ford, so I like when people buy American. That being said, the best car I ever had was a Nissan Maxima. It went over 200,000 miles with NO PROBLEMS. I finally gave it to my brother, but he traded it in later. I bet the damn thing is STILL running...lol.

SO - which way are you leaning?

if you are truly concerned for getting your money's worth, then I hope you're not buying brand new. AT LEAST, go for a 1yr old car or a demo or something. Off the bat, youre saving thousands.

I agree - but we can't find an '06 hybrid anywhere - they sell like hotcakes - we are forced to go '07 with the hybrid.

They dont sell like hotcakes, it's just that your dealership (like the others btw) wont get many of these, so the few they have will sell pretty fast. Cant even remember the last time I saw a hybrid (no matter the brand)....

Exactly - that's what I meant to say. However, I see hybrids all over the place.

OK then the $ you save monthly on gas (you wont know ACTUAL savings until you drive for a while) will be eaten up with extra cost on the front end for purchasing a '07. but whatever.

so what youre saying is you'd rather take out a larger loan and pay more in interest (assuming youre not paying cash and you arent getting some 0% APR deal) in order to get slightly better gas mileage.

Yeah.... the thing about it is a year old Murano, without the new car interest rate is about the same monthly payment. If I can't save 80 bucks a month on the payment then the Escape wins. Plus, I just want a hybrid. :)

My friend, you're gonna sleep on the couch. Get yourself a good set of blankets.
